Canned Beans Become Approved October 1,

2011Another option for WIC participants in addition to dry beans and peas

Readily available at authorized WIC vendors

Consumer demand has shifted greatly in recent years from dried beans in packets to canned beans

The Requirements for Canned Beans

Can only be purchased with Food Instruments (FIs)

Any brand and variety of plain beans15 oz to 16 oz cansCan have added salt and sugarCan be labeled reduced sodiumCannot have added meat, sauces, or

spicesCannot be labeled organic

Now Here’s Our Second Question

These have both tomato sauce and meat

Are they approved? Are they approved?

The Answer is No for Both

•Approved products cannot have added meat, sauces or spices

We Now Move on to Our Third Question

Are these products primarily aimed at Hispanic participants approved?

The Answer is Yes for All of Them

•Again, any brand of plain beans in the correct size is approved

And Now Here is Our Fourth and Final Question

Are either one of these Great Northern Beans approved?
