ChanuCan 2019 – Jewish Journeys – Let’s Go!THOSE IN NEED, NEED US EVERYDAY
The problem of hunger is one that affects many in our community and it is our Jewish responsibility to respond by giving to those in need.
IT’S OUR 5TH ChanuCan! ChanuCan premiered in December 2011 with a resounding number of volunteers, fantastic donations of dollars and cans, and hands-on educational opportunities, not only for our
Religious School students, but for all of us in the congregation.
With pride for what we did, and excitement for what we can still do, that we launch ChanuCan 2019!
ChanuCan raises food and awareness by teaching our children through experiential opportunities, and involves the entire congregation in a necessary and worthwhile mission.
More than anything, at this time we need your fi nancial support.
Through your generous donations we are able to purchase food for a creative can-building program. These cans and non-perishable food items are then donated to local food banks; each past ChanuCan event has privileged us to donate over 12,000
pounds of food! Once again, we are partnering with Second Harvest and Jewish Family Service of the Lehigh Valley.
A donation of any amount is welcomed. Please consider becoming a sponsor for a minimum donation of $144.00 ($18 a night for each night of Chanukkah!). Sponsors are acknowledged in our program for their
support of a classroom, a building team or even individual students and family members.
Perhaps the most important thing we have learned as ChanuCan moves forward into our third effort is this: Those in need, need us EVERYDAY. Thank you for your past contributions and for giving generously again to ChanuCan 2019.

Message from the Rabbi: Have you wanted to visit Israel but simply could
not aff ord the trip? Have you wanted to visit but travelling that distance is simply too hard for you? Have you visited Israel and seen the popular sites but never experienced the beauty of the wild open countryside? NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!!
Last October while attending the Federations’ General Assembly in Tel Aviv, I met an extraordinary young man, Udi Goren. Udi is a photographer who hiked and photographed the entire 700 mile long route of the Israel Trail (Israel’s equivalent of the Appalachian Trail). Along the way he encountered all sorts of interesting people. His photographs of Israel’s stunning landscape are unbelievably beautiful. Whether you have visited Israel or for various reasons are unable to make the trip, seeing his slides and hearing his presentation is the next best thing to actually making the trip to Israel. With so much attention focused on the political side of Israel, sometimes her incredible beauty gets under-appreciated.
Whether you are young or old, this program is inviting to everyone. Plea se join us for “A Walk of the Land: The Israel National Trail,” on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Temple Beth El for what I am sure will be an amazing presentation by Udi Goren. The event is co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, Charles & Figa Kline Foundation, and Temple Beth El and is open to the entire community.

Sisterhood Message:Happy Fall! We hope everyone is enjoying autumn
and the cooler weather. We want to start by thanking Bobbe Weiner for coordinating the beautiful fl oral arrangements on behalf of Sisterhood that enhanced our worship spaces throughout the High Holiday season.
Sisterhood’s annual Paid-Up Event was enjoyable and very meaningful. A big Thank You goes out to all the wonderful committee members for bringing such a special program to our Sisterhood and to all those who helped make this event successful – from set-up, to glazing the hearts of hope, and fi nally wrapping the hearts to deliver to The Chemo Bag. We had an amazing turnout and enjoyed doing this mitzvah together.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 17th from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.; Sisterhood will be hosting a Brunch and Learn Event featuring Jeri Zimmerman, the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley. The topic will be: Past to Present - Female Leaders in Judaism. Watch your email for the invite.
Mark your calendars for our annual Gift Shop Giftique which will be held on Sunday, December 8th from 9:00 am to 12 noon. This Gift Shop event is so large that the entire gift shop is displayed in the Wax Auditorium. Jill Steigerwald and Andy Kopyt have
many fabulous new items that are sure to make great holiday gifts for everyone on your list. If you haven’t attended before, make sure to stop by. Your purchases help to support Sisterhood and Temple Beth El. The gift card book will also be on display. You can contact Erica Stein or Alli Lipson for all your gift card needs. Please help spread the word and support our wonderful gift shop as we are the only Judaic gift shop in the Lehigh Valley!!
Mah Jongg Club has gotten off to a great start thanks to the eff orts of Ilene Rubel. There have been lots of laughs and much fun has been had by all participants. The next club playing dates will be Monday, November 4th and December 2nd at the temple. Play time starts at 6:30 pm – come join us!

Jump In, We Can Use Your Help!By Alyssa Pure
On Kol Nidre night I sat and listened to the President of our congregation, Marc Fisher, address the congregation. His plan for goals this year seemed so optimistic. I was moved, as I hope many of you were, to jump in and participate. What a great idea, to get involved and try something new this year. So now with the excitement of the Tishrei holidays coming to an end and a lull before Hanukkah, I urge you, as Marc did, to get involved.
Jewish Family Education is a great way to become more involved in your synagogue congregation. Children and family programs are open to everyone and ideas and participation are not only welcomed, they are highly encour-aged. If you would be willing to read a book, cook a dish, lead a craft or sing along, we can use your help. BimBom Buddies, the cutest group of 0-4 year olds, would love some guest readers or instrument players. We have so many exciting programs coming up this year from a Hoot Hike, to a parent discussion group and of course ChanuCan, and these programs are always so much better with your help.
Lend a hand, if you can and the children of our congregation will really appreciate it. We can’t wait to have you join us this year!

School Shmooze... by Alicia Zahn, Religious School Director
With Thanksgiving in November, this whole month seems like a great time to count our blessings. Here at school, we are blessed to have so many supportive families and we don’t take that for granted. Thank you for continuing to make Religious School a priority in your busy lives. Thank you for continuing to send in tzadakah to help feed local hungry people through ChanuCan. And on Thanksgiving, thank you for modeling what it looks like to be a proud Jew and a proud American.
This month, we invite you to be involved at school in a number of ways. On Sunday, November 3rd, we have Religious School with KI at their location. It will be a memorable morning when all students will participate in music workshops with RICK RECHT and learn about parsha Noah with a visit from Lehigh Valley Zoo animals. There will also be programming just for parents for those who would like to join us that morning. On November 16th, I hope to see EVERYONE participate in our SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE SHABBAT when our PreK-6th graders can Daven with Doughnuts! On Sunday, November 17th, we invite you to Open House so you can see for yourself some of the fun and learning we experience in Religious School. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
