Telehealth is the use of electronic information and
telecommunications technologies to support long-
distance clinical health care, patient and professional
health-related education, public health and health
administration. Sewell & Thede(2011).
The Telehealth process includes:
A telehealth consultation which is created to be as
close to an actual visit as possible
Workstations of telehealth provider is normally within
the vicinity of the practitioners own office
This saves time for the provider’s schedule and
enhances the abilities of the patients to see the doctor
conveniently located to them without having to
commute very far.
At the patient site, the patient’s clinical
information and vitals signs are
assessed and collected by the telehealth
nurse clinician and fax to the doctor
alerting him / her of the patients
information and state of readiness to be
seen.
The interview is then conducted by the use of
videoconferencing so the patient and doctor can see
each other.
Telehealth are subjected to same HIPAA policies and
procedures. ( Armstrong and freush 2013)
Improved access to medical consultation andspecialists.
Quicker and more accurate diagnosis andtreatment which leads to improved patientoutcomes.
Reduced travel, accommodation, and mealexpenses, as location is convenient.
Decreased stress
Hardware, software and peripheral devices are used to
perform telehealth activities. Different technologies
used for telehealth including: Telephones videophones personal computers (PCs) videoconferencing systems store and forward systems (S&F) Specialized Workstations.

Safety and security is protected by the Health
Insurance policy and Accountability Act HIPAA. It
establishes national standards for identity for e-health,
health plans and employees. HIPAA secures and
protects privacy of health data.
Legal and administrative security measures are put in
place to protect patient information
Telehealth allows delivery of health related services and information via telecommunication technologies. Telehealth offers secure, individualized, private medical sessions with specialized physicians, which will improve patient outcome.
