Teaching the Model for Improvement

Improvement Advisors

At the end of this session….

• Explain the Model for Improvement

• Teach the Model for Improvement to teams using interactive techniques

• Use innovative practical techniques to explain and demonstrate testing and innovation

Content

• Structure of the Model

• Learning points for the 3 fundamental questions

• Practical methods and equipment for teaching the PDSA cycle

The Model for Improvement

Tips before you even start:

• Set the context for learning the model to something real…..

• Make the learning interactive

• Split the learning into 2 parts: the fundamental questions (thinking part) and PDSA cycle (doing part)

Essential learning points for the 3 fundamental questions

Question 1: What are you trying to accomplish?

•What?

•How much?

•By when?

•Target group

Essential learning points for the 3 fundamental questions

Question 2: What change can you make that will result in improvement?

•Data over time

•Learn from the data

•Useful not perfection

•Pen and paper

Essential learning points for the 3 fundamental questions

Question 3: What change can you make that will result in improvement?

•Fixing something or innovative change?

•Where are changes sourced from: evidence, experience, hunches

•What changes do you choose: what is going to have the biggest impact?

If you don’t answer the 3 fundamental questions before you start testing,

be prepared to fail!

“What will happen if we try something different?”

“Let’s try it!”“Did it work?”

“What’s next? ”

Practical Methods for Teaching the PDSA cycle

• Mr Potato Head

• Skittles

• Paper aeroplanes

This is not an exhaustive list, if you have other simulations, please share them with us……

Practical Techniques and Methods Exercise

1. Split into 3 groups

2. Experience each simulation: Equipment Facilitation Learning points

3. Have fun

4. Return to whole group for discussion

Discussion

• Learning points – similar for each simulation?

• Will you go out and teach the model?

• All templates and facilitation plans available on extranet
