What are we aiming to achieve?
• Overcome specific barriers to collecting local data:
– The SA knowledge base is limited partly by lack of access to discriminate knowledge and partly due to its relative small size
– The cross-tabulation of regional and industry indicators that allow for cluster activity to be detected is not feasible given the rigid geographic boundaries applied to data collection and the absence of fine-grained (4 digit industry code level) data as can be applied to regions.
– Indirect performance measures that involve indicators of cooperation and interaction between firms, research institutions, education, capital providers etc. are absent from the available data base sources.
