PROGRAM ASSESSMENT (OR LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT)

What it is….The measure of student achievement of the

stated program learning outcomes, andA continuous process based on a curricular

approach that begins with a well-articulated and expected ending.

Why we do it….To see if students are learningTo see if what we’re doing works (whether a

particular activity is achieving its goals)To improve student learning To get better at what you’re doingBecause someone told me I had to

YES, SOMEONE DOES TELL US WE HAVE TO!

4.A.3 The institution documents, through an effective, regular, and comprehensive system of assessment of student achievement, that students who complete its educational courses, programs, and degrees, wherever offered and however delivered, achieve identified course, program, and degree learning outcomes. Faculty with teaching responsibilities are responsible for evaluating student achievement of clearly identified learning outcomes.

ASSESSMENT AND PLANNING AT CPTC

INTRODUCTION TO TASKSTREAMTaskStream is a web-based application that

we use to record our Program Assessment activities

TaskStream streamlines: Content management

Resources, and Communication

Related to learning outcomes assessment and the accreditation process!

TASKSTREAM

TaskStream (AMS) serves as the interactive portal within which learning outcomes, assessment

planning, implementation, tracking and results will be centrally located

and documented for reporting.

TASKSTREAM FEATURES Developing an assessment plan with student

learning outcomes Aligning outcomes in curriculum maps Uploading data (e.g., in spreadsheets and

tables) Inputting assessment results (i.e., the

statistics) Documenting results Creating action plans based on the results Identifying resource needs to implement

actions Tracking action status Reporting

PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENTThe mission statement should be a clear and concise statement of the program’s purpose for being.

What are the opportunities or needs your program exist to address?

Who is it serving? What principles or beliefs guide

your work?

CPTC’S MISSION

“We are a values-driven institution that delivers quality education, training and support

focused on student success in an evolving economy”

GENERIC PROGRAM EXAMPLE

The Retail Management Program provides competency-based degree and certificate training that leads

graduates to employment in the field of sales and marketing.

MORE MISSION EXAMPLES There are numerous examples on-line. One

of these is http://www.missionstatements.com/

If you would like to revise or rewrite your mission statement, take a look at some others.

This is also something that you could

include your advisory committee in.

PROGRAM OUTCOMESLearning Outcomes are statements that describe significant and essential learning that learners have achieved, and can reliably demonstrate at the end of a program, course, module or lesson.  Learning Outcomes identify what the learner will know and be able to do – the essential and enduring knowledge, abilities (skills) and attitudes (values, dispositions) that constitute the integrated learning needed by a graduate of a course or program. (University of Connecticut).

PROGRAM OUTCOMES Use action verbs (behavioral verbs)

Use clear, jargon-free language

Describe student rather than teacher behavior

Describe learning outcome rather than learning process or activities

Focus on the end behavior rather than on the subject matter coverage

They must be realistic and attainable

Have it validated by colleagues

OUTCOME MAPPINGOutcome mapping is the process of

documenting the alignment of program outcomes, when appropriate, to one or

more college-wide outcomes. College-wide Outcome sets

College Mission ThemesPresident’s Strategic PrioritiesCollege Strategic Goals 2014 – 2019Student Learning Core abilities

CURRICULUM MAPPING Map program learning outcomes to the

program courses in which they are…. Introduced,Practiced,Reinforced, andAssessed.

TaskStream permits a deeper level of mapping in which course-level outcomes can be mapped to program-level outcomes

Demonstrates alignment!

Findings and Closing the LoopFindings per measureOverall RecommendationsOverall Reflection

SELECT PREVIOUSLY ENTERED OUTCOMES

At least 3 outcomes for each assessment cycle, and

At least one must be mapped to a CPTC Student Learning Core Ability

WHAT ARE MEASURES?

Measures are the assessment strategy to be used to determine the level of student

achievement of a stated outcome

Measures may occur at more than one point in time, and in more than one

course

A single outcome may include more than one measure

COMPONENTS OF MEASURES Measure Title Measure Type/Method Measure Level Description Acceptable Target Ideal Target Implementation Plan (timeline) Key/Responsible Personnel

FINDINGS AND CLOSING THE LOOP Findings

The documented results of an implemented measure

The quality improvement plans for an outcome
