Unit Title: Celebrating Tradition Lesson Number and Title: 7, American Thanksgiving Traditions

Context

• Students have been introduced to the word “tradition” and have had opportunities to experience various traditions in the classroom, most notably celebrating Veterans Day. This lesson provides children an opportunity to connect what they may know about Thanksgiving and the traditions that go with it.

Objectives (I Can Statement) • I can talk about Thanksgiving traditions that I celebrate.

(1) EL-P-SLO-U-2: Students need to be able to communicate ideas effectively.

(2) EL-P-SLO-U-1: Students will understand that communication, both formal and informal, is an interpretive process that integrates listening, observing, reading, writing and speaking with confidence.

Unit Title: Celebrating Tradition Lesson Number and Title: 8, Our “Grateful” Tree

Context

• Students have been introduced to the word “gratitude” and “grateful.” They have dictated what they are grateful for in various class discussions. They have identified with children in several Thanksgiving stories and what those children were grateful for. Students are divided into centers. This is a small group activity.

Objectives (I Can Statement) • I can use the word “grateful” in a sentence.

Context

• Students have been introduced to the word “tradition” throughout various other lessons within the unit. Most recently, they have discussed Thanksgiving traditions in the United States. Students have written about traditions by using the word. This activity, the unit’s summative assessment, requires students to think about traditions that they celebrate and write about one of them without using the word directly (though they may if they choose to).

Objectives (I Can Statement) • I can write about a tradition I celebrate. • I can illustrate a picture to match my sentence. • I can be an author and an illustrator.
