Beam: Width.

Draft: How much water a vessel draws, or how far below the waterline the vessel’slowest point is.

Height of tallest mast: The figures given here are measured from the keel to the top of themast.

Keel: The timber or metal extending along the middle of a vessel’s bottom for its entirelength.

Length: The length of sailing ships can be given in several ways: Sparred, overall, ondeck and on the waterline. Lengths given here are sparred — the distance between theextremities of any spars overhanging the bow and stern of a vessel — and length ondeck (LOD), the distance between the forwardmost and aftermost points on a deck.

Lugger: A small vessel equipped with a lugsail or lugsails.

Lugsail: A four-sided sail with its top supported by a yard fastened obliquely to the mast.

Scuttle: To deliberately sink your own vessel.

George Mainguy startedconverting the vessel to a 19th-centuryGrand Banks schooner, replacing themain engine, rebuilding the hull andbuilding out the rigging. Renamed the"Mist of Avalon," it returned to the sea in1997 and has since been featured inmovies and at maritime festivals.

Galleons had more cargocapacity, defense capabilities and better maneuverability thanprevious ship designs.Interesting tidbit: The hull and decks of El Galeon Andalucía werebuilt up in layers of fiberglass, after which the structure was linedwith wood. Patton (then acolonel). “When the war isover, and if I live throughit, Bea and I are going to sail her around the world,” he wrote. Patton diedfrom injuries suffered in an automobile accident in late 1945 — but the shipstayed in the Patton family until 1972, when it was donated to a sail trainingprogram for kids. In 1990 it broke loose during a storm and suffered majordamage; it went back into private ownership and was rebuilt, andrelaunched in 1994. It was restored again after being purchased by DougHazlitt in 2012.
