What Is Co-education:• It is the integrated education of males and females

in the same institution.

• Co-ed (or coed) is shortened as an adjective form of "coeducation", and the word co-ed is sometimes also used, in the United States, as a noun to refer to a female student at a coeducational college or university.

• This usage reflects the historical process by which it was often female pupils who were admitted to schools originally reserved for boys, and thus it was them who were identified with its becoming "coeducational".

Is it NECESSARY?• Co-education builds confidence in a person and

makes him/her a complete person to live in a real world. In other words, studying in the same-sex education system makes a person lack in self confidence.

HISTORY

• Coeducation, instruction of both sexes in the same institution. The economic benefits gained from joint classes and the need to secure equality for women in industrial, professional, and political activities have influenced the spread of coeducation. There were scattered examples of coeducation in the late 17th cent. in Scotland and in the American Colonies, but there was no general trend until the great expansion of public education between 1830 and 1845 in the developing W United States. The distance between schools in that region and the small number of pupils caused elementary schools to admit girls. The movement spread naturally to the secondary schools during the reorganization of public education after the Civil War. Oberlin College gave degrees to both men and women as early as 1837, but it was the development of state universities during the post–Civil War era that standardized collegiate coeducation. Since 1960 nearly every formerly single-sex college has become coeducational; only about one hundred, mostly historic women's schools and men's seminaries, remain. The coeducational movement encountered stronger resistance outside the United States. In Europe, the Scandinavian countries were the earliest supporters, but many other nations limited coeducation to institutions of higher learning. Although coeducation has expanded since World War II, there are many nations where it still meets opposition on religious and cultural grounds.

PROS:

CONS:

• If we look from a Western sociological perspective, co-

education has been declared as extremely

disadvantageous to the female students

• Many feminist movements have started an active campaign

to get non co-ed schools established in large numbers

• The tremendous loss caused by co-education is moral

degeneration

• Why students adopt other ways?

• The wrong ideas set by the media and the awful bombardment of immoral images and characters.

• This reality coupled with the fact that they are mostly devoid of the supervision of any true and sincere mentor at school in that their teachers themselves do  not present their students with a role model of morality, cause the innocent students to fall prey.

• Therefore, it is incumbent upon the government to make necessary arrangements in order to realize this end.

• Government should very carefully choose the faculty of their institutes. All the teachers must be an embodiment of the values of decency and goodness. If these measures are taken the possibility of going astray will greatly decrease.
