The 3 Rs – Replication, Retention, and Refresh
Dedupe costs grow dramatically as data ages and back end storage grows
No license cost for increased backup storage as data ages
Dedupe technology is purchased every time hardware is refreshed
License NOT transferable to other platforms
License is perpetual – buy once, own forever
License not tied to hardware – no lock-in

Reality is – most are “messy” data environments… we can’t compare
CPU & memory for accurate consolidation plans.
So how many of my Media servers will
collapse into a 5220? How can we quantify it?

End-to-End Dedupe
Up to 5x Faster than
others!
• Applying more conservative values for client dedup (8 – 10 TB/hr), and for target dedup (3 – 4 TB/hr) for sizing purposes. (much higher for NBU Accelerator clients)
• Remember, the 5220 can function as Master server too – other PBBAs won’t have this role
• And, 5220 (as media servers) can load balance within a domain – other PBBAs cannot do this! Each Media server is not a performance island.
• Plan for restores -> up to 800 GB/hr for 8 streams or higher. Or, 80 GB/hr for 1 stream

End of Support Life (EOSL): NetBackup 6.5
• Ensure continued Symantec Support
– Customers on NetBackup 6.X will no longer receive support from Symantec UNLESS they purchase a support extension.
• Why Upgrade to NetBackup 7.5 ?
– Data Protection Optimization Option (Dedupe Everywhere & NetBackup Accelerator) reduces volume versus storage reduction
– Symantec V-Ray – Efficiently/intelligently dedupe across both physical and virtual machine data in a single pass

Managing Data Replication
Tech Exchange: Symantec NetBackup Appliances 28 28
What is Auto Image Replication?
• Automatic copying of individual backup images between independent NetBackup domains
– Extends the SLP model beyond the borders of a single NetBackup domain
– Allows selective replication of critical backup data
• Changes the game in off-site data protection by introducing a continuous process:
– Automatically sends backups off-site electronically
• No need to ship tapes to a DR site
– Images available on demand at the target site
• No time consuming catalog recovery
• No complex DR fire drills
• Allows different retentions to be applied in source and target domains but ensures a minimum “off site” retention
– Addresses long term compliance issues as well as site DR

What Analysts Say
Tech Exchange: Symantec NetBackup Appliances 37
What our Customers Say
“Symantec NetBackup 5200 appliances …. were ‘literally plug and play – plug them in, set the address, and point
them toward the master server’”
Tech Exchange: Symantec NetBackup Appliances 38
“When we have separate hardware and software, we have to map and coordinate events such as operating system upgrades, patches, and storage changes, and they don’t always mesh smoothly. Appliances
simplify this.”
“By achieving up to 90 percent deduplication rates with Symantec NetBackup 7 software and Symantec NetBackup 5000 appliances, we project we’ll save more than $400,000 over the next three years on
backup hardware and media.”
“The NetBackup appliances were the ideal fit, offering a turnkey approach to deduplication and efficient, storage-optimized data protection.”
