ASSESSMENT TASK:G (goal) - Your goal is to demonstrate yourunderstanding of percentages in relation to reallife.R (role) - You and your partner are refugees andhave just arrived in Genoa.S (situation) - You have no money, but thegovernment gives you “social assistance” fundingto survive. The government gives you €10,000 peryear - that’s €192.31 per week, or €833.33 permonth. This amount needs to cover all your livingexpenses. In your family there are 2 adults and 1child, your child is 11 years old. You must find aplace to live and prepare a monthly budget for rent, food, transportation, living expenses, clothes andother expenses. As a class, you will create a list ofall of these expenses and every pair will use thislist.P (product, performance or purpose) - Thisassignment has many different tasks that willrequire a lot of organization. You and your partnerwill need to collaborate well. It will be veryimportant to set up a good organizationalframework to ensure that you can both access allyour information easily, and that it will not get lost.

S (standards) - The standards you will be assessed on are Criteria C and D.

Once you have read through the assignment with your partner, your first task will beto create a to-do list along with a calendar of when each item will be completed.

Think about the following questions:● How will you organize your information?● How will you record and keep track of the websites you have used?

Rest, Ressit, Recg o Exle

● How will you break up the tasks into manageable sections?● How will you create a to-do list?● What headings will your to-do list have?● How will you communicate with each other?● How will you manage your time so that you do not leave too much work to the lastminute?

Once you have submitted this to-do list, you can complete the tasks in this document for youboth to work on.

Part A - Preparation - You need to complete this part of the document tocomplete your assessment

1. To do list (complete this table with a list of things that need to be done, the first couplehave been done for you, you may add extra rows if you need them). Read through thedocument first, before completing the to-do list. Miss House must approve the checklistbefore you start.

2. Once you have found your accommodation, locate it on a map of your city/town. Insertthe map here.

What will you eat?

1. Find food to eat. Write down a nutritious meal plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner forseven days. Be specific – don’t just write ‘sandwich’ – consider all the parts of thesandwich you will need: bread, mustard, tomato, cheese, etc. Use the chart below torecord your meal plan. Remember this is a meal plan for all people in your family.

Mon Tues Weds Thurs Fri Sat Sun

Breakfast Cereal(carbohydrates)and milk(protein)

Lunch

Dinner

Snack

2. Calculate the costs of the items in your meal plan. First, create a grocery list for the foodyou will need to make the meals listed in your chart for one week using this chart below. Then put the list in a chart with three columns: the food item, the estimated cost andthe actual cost. You will then estimate how much you think each item costs and calculatethe total.

You can use the following websites:

Food Item Estimated Cost Actual cost

Bananas €2

Cereal x 2 €6

Milk €3

Lettuce €2

Dried Pasta €3

Cereal €2

Carrots

3. Calculate the actual total cost of the groceries.

4. Calculate the percentage difference between what you estimated the total cost of thegroceries to be and their real cost.

5. Explain the degree of accuracy of your results in part E. Describe whether or notyour results make sense.

What are your expenses?

1. You will set up a monthly budget spreadsheet. A budget tracks your income and yourexpenses to help you see how much money you will have left to save or how much youwill be in debt. The budget is best created using a spreadsheet, so you can set up aformula for ‘Income less total expenses’. This number should be positive so that you donot go into debt. Here is an example budget spreadsheet.

2. Record your thoughts andreactions. Discuss

what struggles you are facing, and your thoughts about how refugees might survive onthis money.

Part B – Analysis1. Using the grocery list based on your meal plan for the week, approximate what

percentage of the grocery list is:

a) carbohydratesb) proteinc) fat

2. Select one of the days of the week from Part A food diary and calculate the number ofcalories you will eat in that day by completing the table below:

Meal Total calories per person(divide by 3) (includingworking)

Breakfast

Lunch

Dinner

Snack

3. Compare this amount to what a person in a refugee camp eats in a day and what you actuallyeat in a day. (You calculated these in the formative assessment task earlier in the unit.)

a) Who consumes the greatest number of calories in a day?

b) Who consumes the greatest percentage of carbohydrates, protein and fat in a day:you, someone in a refugee camp, or the refugee moving to a new country?

c ) Did any data in the comparison surprise you? Why or why not?

4) Looking at your monthly budget, calculate each expense as a percentage of the total.Did any of the expenses surprise you? Why or why not?

Self-managementThroughout this assignment, you have worked on developing your self-management skills tostay on task and meet the deadlines outlined by your teacher. Using a copy of the checklistbelow, reflect on how you were able to manage your organizational skills and affective skillsthroughout the assignment. In the rst column, rank yourself as 1 (emergent), 2 (capable) or 3(exemplary) to indicate how each skill has developed. In the next column, discuss what you didwell and what you would do next time to improve each skill.
