Types of Government
Monarchy-one of the oldest forms of government
-claim to rule by “divine right”, in some cases they are thought of (or think of themselves as) human gods
-titles are passed down through generations
-monarchs rule with total power, and have the right to create or enforce any law they desire; they also rule the military, politics and the economy
Constitutional Monarchy-acknowledge a monarch as head of state, but monarch has no power
-most CM’s have a democratic parliament, where a Prime Minister is voted into power by election
-the true power resides with the citizens
Oligarchy-a small group of people have all of the power-some examples of an oligarchy are:
• Theocracy, rule by religious officials• Plutocracy, rule by the wealthy• Timocracy, rule by the most intelligent
-most often, oligarchies try to balance the interest of all people
Communism-most property is publicly owned and each citizen works for the benefit of the country
-the idea is a classless society where all people are equal and no one person is wealthier or above another
-no matter the job, everyone is paid the same
-in order for communism to work, citizens must make personal sacrifices for the betterment ofthe entire society
Fascism-led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism
-controlling everything and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism (love of the country)
-an extremely authoritarian style of government
-often rely on propaganda and violent enforcement of political messages
Democracy-government that is controlled by the entire population through elected officials
-the elected officials have the responsibility to respect the needs of people
-the citizens have the responsibility to abide by the laws of the state and government
