Starting with

Bad PowerPoint

1. Slideware creates poor slide-audience relationships.

2. Slideware creates good slide-audience relationships,

if we defy the templates it provides.

3. Slideware can be used as a viable new media tool,

if we understand it in terms of other

visual storytelling tools like film and comics.

4. Maybe slideware should play a key role

in your new media course.

• Are not exactly the height of powerful visual

communication, are they?

• Can you really listen to me AND write down my bullet

points? Research says NO.

• We can process a visual stream of info and a verbal one, but

not two verbal ones at the same time. (See John Sweller.)

• Plus, what is the relationship between an audience and a

slide full of bullet points?

• What are audience members supposed to do with bullet

point info?

• They’re supposed to write it down? Memorize it?

• This is what we want our students and audiences doing?

Probably not...

“Talking about pollution in Houston? Instead of giving me four bullet points of EPA data, why not show me a photo of a bunch of dead birds, some smog and even a diseased lung? Amazingly, it’s more fun than doing it the old way. But it’s effective communication.” -Seth Godin

I’m

probably

out of

time...

...which is why I’ve put a bunch

of classroom suggestions on the

back of the handout, for your

consideration.

1. It’s bad.

2. It’s good.

3. It’s new media.

4. It’s got great potential for teaching.
