What is the What is the STARscannerSTARscanner TM??
The STARscanner is a non-contact laser data acquisition system that utilizes 3-D surface scanning technology to collect and
compare head shape information during the treatment of positional plagiocephaly and other head shape deformations.

Laser TechnologyLaser Technology
• Four lasers shine a flat beam to make a line of light around the surface of the head shape.
• Cameras and lasers are mounted within shielded cameras on each side of the STARscannerTM.

How does it work? How does it work?1. Infant’s head is scanned on STARscanner.
2. Data is emailed to Orthomerica.
3. Head shape data is downloaded on five-axis carver.
4. The STARband is fabricated out of high temperature plastic thermoformed over a carved, polyurethane model.
5. STARband is shipped to orthotist.
6. Infant receives STARband for initial fitting.
7. Follow-up visits scan infant for head shape comparisons to evaluate treatment progression.

Preparing the InfantPreparing the Infant
• Open face cotton stockinette is placed on the infant’s head to eliminate extraneous data in the scan.

The Scanning The Scanning ProcessProcess
1. Infant is placed supine into STARscanner on foam cushion.
2. Infant’s head is stabilized with hand below jaw and hand over the top of the head to minimize movement.
3. Head is scanned – 1.5 seconds.4. Scan is viewed on the computer
monitor to ensure quality of the scan.5. Scan is e-mailed to Orthomerica.
