NEXT HOME GAME
1874 Northwich
Saturday 11th April
KO: 15.00
Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium
for this afternoon’s home league fixture against Runcorn Town FC.
First of all may I welcome Runcorn’s management team and all as-
sociated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.
Our performance on Tuesday evening was very pleasing. We had to show two sides to
our game in order to get the excellent 2-1 victory. In the 1st half we were dominant and
were a threat to the West’s defenders on a regular basis. Apart from Ben Fletcher having
to pull off a fantastic save in the opening 10 minutes I felt we deserved our 2 goal lead at
half time. In the 2nd half the heavens opened and with a strong gale in our faces we had
to defend resolutely which I thought we did very well. Our solid foundation of being able
to defend when needed has stood us in good stead for the vast majority of the season
and I feel that this has been the corner stone to the success that we have had so far. We
hope to continue our performance levels in this area for the remaining 5 games whilst
still having the guile and flare to break teams down. Tommo, myself and the players have
talked on a regular basis about wanting to finish the season strong and we hope to con-
tinue that today.
Our opponents today are not to be underestimated. They have had some fantastic re-
sults over the course of the season, beating Barrow FC in the FA Cup and Runcorn Lin-
nets both away from home are 2 that spring to mind. There’s no room for complacency in
football and that is certainly the case today. I hope the players continue to do themselves
proud and play with commitment and passion in todays and the remaining 4 games of
the season.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture….

RUNCORN LINNETS
GATE TAKE EXCELLENT POINT FROM LEADERS LINNETS
Squires Gate hosted league leaders Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday night in what
would be one of there toughest tests this year. Linnets currently sit fourth in the
form table having won four of their last six. In there ranks they have Freddie Potter
who has scored a lot of vital goals towards the ends of games to secure points for
linnets so is someone who they'll have to look out for. Gate made 3 changes from
Saturdays 0-0 draw with Winsford, Zach Clark, Billy McKenna and Danny Penswick
all coming into the starting line-up.
It was a quick start to the game with both sides looking up for it and looking lively.
Ben Fletcher was called into action after just 5 minutes in goal for Gate, his brilliant
save denied what would have been a wonderful opener from Linnets. Runcorn had
another chance soon after, Lomax sent though his shot beating Ben Fletcher but
luckily for Gate Captain Penswick got back on the line to clear the ball and keep
Gate in the game. Gate's best chance of the opening exchanges came when Harry
Dunn beat 3 men through the middle before slipping Mark Buchan in but his shot
was saved well. Linnets opened the scoring on 28 minutes, the ball fired into the
box found Michael White at the back post to head the opener. Gate had the chance
to level just minutes later Harry Dunn with the reverse pass sent Richards into the
box but his piledriver was well saved by Mot-
tram in the Linnets goal. As half time ap-
proached Gate had four clear chances in the
last five minutes.

Gate continued their good form into the start of the second half and opens the
scoring just five minutes in. Good link up play between McKenna and Richards
down the right before Buchan met with a Richards cross in to level the scoring.
Linnets top scorer Freddie Potter, could have put Linnets ahead on 56 minutes
but after he'd rounded Ben Fletcher his shot could only find the side netting.
Fletcher made up for his mistake with a fine save which set up a counter attack
for Gate, the end shot from Murphy though was fired over the bar. Gate's final
chance of the night fell to Zach Clark he found space in behind but was judged to
be offside.
After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said:" I thought we throughout de-
served our point and possibly should have gained all three. I though we took the
game to them and were a threat all night. It was probably one of our best perfor-
mances of the season and we'll be looking to continue this for the last eight
games."
Gate have a week off now and aren't back on action until they travel to 1874
Northwich on the 21st March.

SQUIRES GATE
Squires Gate visited Runcorn Linnets on Saturday looking to get back
on track after conceding late against 1874 Northwich. The two teams
met earlier in the month at School Road with the final score 1-1. Com-
ing into the game Linnets sit 8 points clear of Glossop at the top of the
league. Gate Anderson one change to the starting 11 with Zach Clark
coming in for Michael Hall. New signings Ashely Rowley and Joshua
Kay both started in the bench for this game.
Gate had an early chance less than a minute into the game to open the
scoring. A pass played back to Mottram didn't have enough power on it
but with Buchan baring down Mottram in goal did all he could to get to
the ball first and clear it out of danger. Gate again looked to attack ear-
ly on and on 5 minutes Zach Clark sent in a lovely ball that just needed
any touch to score but no one could get on the end of it. Gates early
chances seemed to wake the home side
up and they went on to be the better team
in the first half. A long ball pumped forward
from the Linnets goalkeeper found Kevin
Towey at the edge of the box who did bril-
liantly to control the ball but his shot fell
straight into the hands of
The opener came in the 16th minute, the ball fired out to the left was well
controlled before the cross into the box was met by Josh Westwood who's
clearance could only find the back of the net to score the own goal. The
home side doubled the lead 15 minutes later when Adam Wade controlled
the ball on the edge of the box edits unleashing the shot which flew into the
bottom corner past the helpless Fletcher. The home side could have made
it three late in the half but a brilliant point blank save from Fletcher kept the
score at 2-0 going into half time.
The start of the second half started much like the first ended, Ben Fletcher
again keeping Gate in the game early on. Gate looked a lot better in the
second half and more like the team that has been successful this season.
Billy McKenna had a chance 20 minutes into the second half. Good hold up
play by Alex Mckendrick on the edge of the box before playing through
McKenna but his shot was tipped over. Gate then could have scored soon
after but Chris Anderson's free kick was just wide if the far post. Perhaps
Gates best chance of the game fell to Josh Westwood but his header flew
over the bar.
As the game went on Linnets seemed to be happy to settle for what they
had got and didn't really cause Gate any notable problems.
After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said: We were very disap-
pointed with our 1st half performance, we
lacked the qualities we've possessed all sea-
son that has got us where we are. Our 2nd
half performance was much better, information
that was given at half time was took on board
and we asked questions of them. We need to
move forward and be positive for Tuesday's
game. Runcorn deserved their win and I wish
them all the best for the rest of the season.
Runcorn Town were formed in 1967 under the name of Mond Rangers FC. They played for the
first few years in the Runcorn Sunday league, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Satur-
day football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL).
Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team until the 1991/92 season when
they won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl as well as a respectable sixth place
finish. The following season they finished third in the league and reached the Bowl final, with
another third place finish the following season in which they scored 100 goals and regaining
the Bowl. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring
118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victo-
ria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere.
The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the
Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places
for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced
back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time.
The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the
field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for
the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the
North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the
FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history.
It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations, with the team los-
ing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up,
with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quar-
ter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Chal-
lenge Cup, whilst Warrington Town were held in the Cheshire Senior Cup before losing on pen-
alties.
In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through
four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS,
the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition.
The club were also once again the last remaining NWCL side in the FA Vase, this time reaching
a replay in the Last 32 before bowing out. We also made our debut in the FA Cup, winning two
games before bowing out in the 1st Qualifying Round to Evo-Stik League side Ashton United.
Last season was another good season for the club, finishing in fourth place in the Premier Divi-
sion just four points off top spot. Progress was made in the FA Vase with the Last 16 reached
for the first time, with the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Vase made once more. Another good
scalp came in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 5-0 away win at Warrington which earned the
"Team of the Round" award.

1874 LEFT IT LATE BUT STEAL A POINT FROM GATE
Squires Gate were on their travels again this weekend this time returning to
Winsford where 1874 Northwich were the opponents. Gate made the same trip
two weeks ago when they drew 0-0 with Winsford. Gate opponents for today,
1874 Northwich are a fan owned club in their first year in the North West Coun-
ties Premier Division. This is the first time the clubs have met in the league. 1874
sit two places above Gate in third position on 60 points whilst Gate sit fifth on 55
points. Gate made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with league leaders
Runcorn Linnets during the week, Danny Penswick returning in place of Zach
Clark from suspension and Alex McKendrick coming back onto the bench.
he game started at a quick pace with both teams looking to play with a quick tem-
po. 1874 had a good spell of pressure early on but could create noting due to a
combination of good defending by Gate and a lack of a killer instinct meant they
could find any way through. Gates first chance of the game came when Mark
Buchan was fouled just outside the box and the striker would take the resulting
free kick but could only find the wall.
Gates next chance was the best of the
opening 20, good link up play between
Dunn and Buchan but Dunn's ball across
the box couldn't find a Gate man. Gates
pressure would finally pay off when they
would take the lead on the 25th minute.
The ball thrown into the box and what
seemed like a fairly easy catch for 1874
keeper Matt Conkie was made difficult
when Alex Murphy got his head to the
ball before Conkie could claim. Murphy's
quick reactions then saw him take the
ball down and slot into the empty net with
Conkie grounded to score his 11th league
goal of the season. That's how the two
teams would go into half time, just the
one goal separating them but both teams very much still in the game.
The second half came but didn't affect either team who both still went for the win.
Gates passing accuracy and closing down will surely please the management team
with this evident throughout the second half on what is a difficult pitch. Gate will also be
happy with the ability shown to keep a team that has scored 60 goals so far this sea-
son quiet. Gate restricting the home side to mostly long range shots with Keeper Ben
Fletcher not having much to do. Alex Murphy showed good vision five minutes into the
second half when he found space on the right hand side of the box but before he could
get a shot away 1874 defender Lee Duckworth cleared the ball off his toe. Gate had a
golden chance to make it 2-0 and possibly to wrap up the game. With 1874 pushing
forward for the equaliser Gate caught them on the break 3 vs 3 and with the ball at his
feet Harry Dunn chose to pass instead of shoot.. His ball found Mark Buchan but the
inform striker could only find the post much to the disbelief of most of the crowd. Gate
would be made to pay the price for that miss shortly after when on the 88th minute
substitute Chris Lunn found space at the near post the squeeze the ball past Fletcher
to equalize for the home side. And that's how the game would end, Gate perhaps un-
lucky not to hold on to get all three points but a point makes it five unbeaten for
Squires Gate.

@justdan__ Have no interest in
international football. It’s all
about @RuncornLinnets vs
@squiresgatefc tomorrow!
@ContiCas: Superb attitude &
character shown by all involved
tonight with @squiresgatefc in
testing conditions and really
pleasing to get the 3 points.
@Mark_Ashmore: @ContiCas
@squiresgatefc Tonight was
the sort of game we would have
lost in past seasons. Everyone
showed 100% commitment.
