e.Grabthefemaleendsofthesnaps.Loopandtwistoneofthepositivewiresthroughafemalesnap.Addatouchofsoldertosecuretheconnection.Repeatfortheotherpositivewireandremainingfemalesnap.Grabthemaleendsofthesnaps.Repeattheprocess,solderingthenegativewirestothemalesnaps.

1. WIRE THE PHONE FLASHER uNIT

The phone flasher comes with 2 LEDs presoldered on the circuit board. You will be removing the LEDs and replacing them with wires soldered with a pair of snaps at each end. A third hand tool is recommended.

a.Removethebatteriesfromthephoneflasherboard.

b.Usingadesolderingbraid,placethebraidoverasolderjointofanLED.Usingtheirontip,pressthetipoverthebraidandjoint.Oncethesolderismolten,removethebraid.(Foradetailedtutorialonhowtodesolder,refertopage49.)Repeatforthesecondjoint,completelyremov-ingtheLEDfromthecircuitboard.RepeatforthesecondLED.BothLEDsshouldnowberemoved.

c.Cutandstriptheendsoffour1½"piecesofstrandedwire.Twisttheendstightlysothattheydon’tfray.Next,tapethephoneflasherboardontoahardsurface(oruseyourthirdhandtool),makingsuretoleavethesolderpointsopen.

d.Solderoneendofthestrandedwireontooneofthesolderpoints.Repeatfortheother3.Thewiressolderednearthemarkings“LED1”and“LED2”ontheboardwillbethenegativewires,andtheother2willbethepositive.Usingablackmarker,markthenegativewires.

NOTE: Before removing LEDs from phone flasher unit, test the unit first (by checking your voicemail, for example) to ensure that it works with your particular cellphone and/ or that the batteries are not discharged. If the LEDs do not blink, try replacing the batteries.

2. cuT THE SPAcE INVADER PATTERN

Use the Space Invader pattern or create one of your own. You will be making 2 Space Invaders to sew onto the upper portion of your tote, one with a pair of LEDs for its eyes.

a.Cutthemetallicnylonripstopfabricintofour6"×8"pieces.Foldthe6"×8"fabricinhalf,lengthwise,wrongsideout,aligningedges.PinthesideofTemplateAmarked“foldline”tothefoldededgeofthefabric.TemplateAwillbethebottomlayeroftheSpaceInvader—thebacking.

3. SEW THE SPAcE INVADERS

a.TopstitchtheupperfabriclayeroftheSpaceInvadertothebottomlayer.RepeatforthesecondSpaceInvader.

b.Topstitchtheeyesontopinanydesiredlocation,preferablyatleast1½"apart.ThiswillbethefrontoftheSpaceInvader.RepeatforthesecondSpaceInvader.

b.Usingatracingpen,tracethepatternontothefabric.Cutthefabricalongyourtracedlines.Repeat3moretimes,cuttingatotalof4pieces.

c.RepeatSteps2aand2bforTemplateBusingtheironingboardfabric,cuttingatotalof2pieces.TemplateBwillbethetoplayeroftheSpaceInvader.

d.PinTemplateContothemetallicnylonripstopfabricandtracethetemplate.Cutatotalof4pieces.TemplateCwillbetheeyes.

e.UsingTemplateA,traceandcut2piecesofinterfacingslightersmallerthanthetemplate.TheinterfacingwillbesandwichedbetweenthetopandbottomfabricpiecestogivetheSpaceInvaderstructure.

c.Takeoneoftheinterfacingpieces.SandwichtheinterfacelayerbetweenthetopandbottomlayersoftheSpaceInvader.Youcanusealayeroffusingmaterialtoadherethepiecestogetherbeforesewing.Topstitchthe3piecestogether.

d.Markthelocationoftheeyesontheremaininginterfac-ingpiece.Usingconductivethread,hand-stitchalinefromthetopoutersectionofaneyedowntothebottomoftheinterfacing.Thiswillbethenegativeline.Thenhand-stitchalinefromthebottominnersectionoftheeyedowntothebottomoftheinterfacing.Thiswillbethepositiveline.Repeatforthesecondeye.Seesewingguideonpage97.

e.Cuttwo1"×2"piecesoffabric.Starting¼"fromtheleftside,usingconductivethread,machine-sewalinefromthetopofthefabric,stopping¼"fromthebottom.Leave5"ofloosethreadfromthetopandbottom.Thensewaparallelline¼"fromtherightside.Repeatforthesecondpiece.

f.Threadasewingneedlewiththeloosethreadfromthebottomleftofthefabric.Hand-sewafemalesnap,securingittothefabric.Knotandcutoffanyextrathread.Thefemalesnapwillbethenegativesnap.Repeat,sewingamalesnaptothebottomrightofthefabric.Themalesnapwillbethepositivesnap.Repeatforthesecondfabricpiece,thistimeswappingtheplacementofthesnaps.

g.Grabtheinterfacinglayer.Placeafabricpiecefacedown,aligningthestitchlinesfromthepositive(male)andnegative(female)snapstothepositive(frombottomofeye)andnegativelines(fromtopofeye)sewnontheinterfacing.Refertothesewingguideonpage97.Threadasewingneedlewiththepositiveloosethreadfromthefabricpiece.Securelysewthefabricpieceontotheinterfacing,overlappingtheconductinglinesfrombothpieces,creatingaconductivepathfromtheinterfacingtothesnap.

h.Threadaneedlewiththenegativeloosethreadfromthefabricpiece.Securelysewthefabricpieceontotheinter-facing,makingsurebothnegativeconductivelinesoverlap.Repeatforthesecondfabricpiece,aligningthestitchlinesfromthepositiveandnegativelinesaccordingly.Placethecombinedtopfabriclayerfacedown.Placetheinterfacinglayerdirectlyontopofthefabriclayerwiththesnapsfacingdown.Pin.

NOTE: For the second fabric piece, swap the place-ment of the male and female snaps so that the female snap is at the bottom left and the male snap is at the bottom right.

4. ADD THE LEDS

a.Turnthecombinedtopfabriclayerandinterfacinglayerrightsideup.PositionanLEDinthecenteroftheeyesquarewiththenegativeleadsfacingup.(IfyouarenotsurewhichisthenegativeorpositiveleadoftheLED,refertopage74tolearnhowtodistinguishbetweenthe2leads.)

PiercetheleadsofanLEDthroughbothpieces,havingtheleadsexitthroughthetopoftheinterfacing.Usingapairofneedlenosepliers,gentlybendtheleadsflushtothefabric.

d.AlignthebottomfabriclayerontopoftheSpaceInvader.Pin.Usingscissors,cut2"offthebottomfabric,creatinganopeningforthesnapfabricstrips.Topstitchthepiecestogether.

b.Usingconductivethread,hand-sewthebottompositiveleadsoftheLEDtothepositivestitchedlineontheinter-facing.Becarefulnottosewthroughthetoplayer.Repeatforthetopnegativeleads,sewingthemtothenegativestitchedlineontheinterfacing.

c.RepeatSteps4aand4bforthesecondLED.Theposi-tiveleadsoftheLEDsshouldnowbeconnectedtothepositivestitchedlineoftheinterfaceconcludingatthepositivemalesnap,andviceversaforthenegativeleads.Allthepositiveconductivepathsshouldnowbeconnectedtogetherandallthenegativepathstoeachother.

5. cuT THE BAG EXTERIOR AND LINING TEMPLATES

a.Foldtheexteriorbagfabricinhalf,lengthwise,wrongsideout,aligningedges.PinthesideofTemplateDmarked“foldline”tothefoldededgeofthefabric.Usingatracingpen,tracethetemplateontothefabric.Cutthefabricalongtracedlines,cuttingnotches.

b.Marka½"seamlinealongallsidesexceptthefoldline.Foldthefabricinhalfalongthefoldline,wrongsideout,aligningedgesandnotchmarks.Machine-stitchalongbothsideseamlinemarkings.

c.RepeatSteps5aand5bfortheliningfabric,butdonotmachine-stitchyet.

6. ATTAcH THE POcKET TO THE LINING

a.PinTemplateEandFontothefabric.Trace,includingtheseamlines.Cutthepocketpieces.

b.Placeoneofpocketpieceswrongsideuponanironingboard.Foldtheseamlinesinwardandpress.Repeatforsecondpocketpiece.

c.Machine-stitchalongthe¾"seamforbothpockets.The¾"seamwillbethetopofthepockets.

d.Placetheliningpiecerightsideup.Centerthesmallpocketpiece,alsorightsideup,2"belowtheupperseamline.Topstitchthepocketpieceintoplace.Repeatforthelargepocketpiece,aligningit1¾"fromtheupperseamline.Thelargepocketpiecewillcoverthesmall,innerpocketpiece.

e.Foldtheliningfabricinhalfalongthefoldline,wrongsideout,aligningedges.Machine-stitchalongbothsideseamlinemarkings.

7. MAKE AND ATTAcH THE STRAP HANDLES

a.Foldthestraphandlefabric(shouldbesimilartotheexteriorfabric)inhalf,wrongsideout.PinthesideofTemplateGmarked“foldline”tothefoldededgeofthefabric.Traceandcutthetemplatealongthemarkinglines.Repeatcuttingforatotalof2pieces.

b.Slipthestraphandlepiecethroughametalstrapcarrier.Machine-stitch¼"fromends.Repeatforthesecondstraphandle.

8. INSERT BAG LINING

a.Insertliningpiece,rightsideout,intotheexteriorbagpiece.Matchthesideseams.Thenfoldthe½"seamallowancesofboththeinnerandouterpiecestowardeachotherandpin.Pressandtopstitcharoundthebagabout¼"fromtheedge(thetopseam,notthesides).

b.Maketwo1½"horizontalbuttonholes2"apartfromeachother,locatingthem1"fromthetopofthelargeinnerpocket.Thesebuttonholeswillbeusedtoslipthesnapfabricpiecesthroughtotheinteriorofthebag.

c.Ontheexteriorbagfabric,positionthestrapcarriersatoppositeendsandoppositesidesofthebag.Alignthebottomofthestrapcarrierpiecetothetopofthebag,withtheangledsidefacingin,andpintotheoutsideofthebag.Machine-stitchthestrapcarriers,securingtheminplace.

9. SEW THE SPAcE INVADERS

a.CentertheSpaceInvaderwithout the LEDsonthebag,with3"ofithangingoffthetopofthebag.ThefirstSpaceInvadershouldbeplacedonthesideofthebagwithout the pockets.Pin,thentopstitchtheSpaceInvaderintoplace.

10. SEW ON THE SHOuLDER STRAP

Cutthenylonwebbingtoyourdesiredlength.Slipthewebbingthroughthestraphandle,loopingitoverontoitself,andmachine-stitch.Repeat,attachingtheoppositeendofthewebbingtothesecondstraphandle.

b.CenterthesecondSpaceInvaderwiththeLEDsontheoppositesideofthebag,aligningitwiththefirstInvader.Pin.Slipthesnapfabricpiecesthroughthebuttonholesintotheinteriorofthebag.ThentopstitchtheSpaceInvader,avoidingtheinteriorpockets.

c.Snapthephoneflasherintoplaceandslipitintothesmallinteriorpocket.
