WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL
ANIMALSCAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-vol-unteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds through-out the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treat-ed like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surren-der. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adop-tion clinics held three times each month.

Family Owned For Over 30 Years
This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

DON’T FORGET TO REPLACE YOUR VEHICLE’S BRAKE HARDWARE(NAPS)—Brakes are a critical component for maintaining vehicle safety. Whether it’s trying to stop your vehicle on an icy, snow-packed road or slowing down on a rain-soaked highway, properly functioning brakes are key to maintaining control of the vehicle.
However, brake wear can compromise vehicle per-formance and, ultimately, threaten vehicle safety. AAA encourages motorists to have a certifi ed techni-cian inspect their brakes to ensure they are ready for whatever Mother Nature has to off er.
In an article featured on theautochannel.com, John Nielsen, director, AAA Auto Repair and Buying Services, noted that there are several warning signs that motor-ists should closely monitor to identify and resolve brake wear before it can impact vehicle safety.
“Often, the fi rst sign of worn brakes is a brake pedal that seems to require more pres-sure to stop the vehicle. Scraping, squeaking or chirping noises that come from the wheels when the brakes are applied are other signs of potentially exces-sive brake wear. A car that pulls to the left or right when the brakes are applied
could also mean trouble,” Nielsen said.
He further advises consum-ers to ask for an annual brake inspection when tak-ing their vehicle into an auto repair shop for service.
Complete Brake Inspection Includes Hardware
According to Chris Miller, Product Development Engi-neer, of International Brake Industries (IBI), consumers should ask their technician to also inspect their vehicle’s brake hardware in order to ensure that their vehicle re-ceives a complete brake job.
Miller explained that brake noise is the No. 1 cause of dissatisfaction and com-plaints about brake systems. Brake noise is usually caused by the vibration of compo-nents that are not properly installed and secured—typi-cally, it’s not the fault of brake pads or shoes, but it can more likely be caused by worn-out brake hardware.
He added that, like most mechanical parts, brake hardware will wear out over time and can’t function if the parts are corroded or stretched. If brake hardware is worn, it can even cause newly installed brake pads to wear out prematurely, reducing the life span of the pads and shoes.
Brake hardware—including clips, bolts, rubber bushings, rubber seals and springs—is integral to the proper op-eration of the vehicle’s entire braking system.
“It’s very common for drivers to leave an auto repair shop with newly replaced pads and shoes, but still experi-ence brake noise because their brake hardware was not replaced,” Miller said. “We have a simple message for consumers: For a few ex-tra dollars, you can protect your investment in brake pads and shoes and ensure optimum performance by also replacing your vehicle’s brake hardware.”
Superior Brake Performance
To reduce brake noise and drag (that is, brake pad fric-tion, which can aff ect fuel economy), IBI recently in-troduced the new line of QuietGlide® brake clips. Qui-etGlide brake clips feature a coating of vulcanized rubber on one side to reduce brake noise and a low-friction PTFE coating on the other side of the clip to reduce drag.
By installing new Quiet-Glide brake clips, consumers are truly receiving a com-plete brake job—ensuring smoother, quieter riding brakes and extending the life of their brake pads and shoes.
