My background

Experiment Don’t be scared if a student knows more

than you – use the student to help! Have a backup plan Test it first if possible If you know what you want to achieve

choose the best tool – if you don’t them experiment!

Ask for help – online, offline, anywhere

Pupils adapt very quickly to online learning There is often a great novelty value which is

motivational but this doesn’t last for ever! Groundrules need to be set as in any other

classroom. Pupils will often use inappropriate language or behaviour, not as a sign of disrespect to the teacher but because they are used to the online space being informal.

Mini version for 3 users is free. Lots of features, more than most need.

Good for teacher led group work and presentations.

A little complicated to start but great once you are confident.

• Simple, free and works worldwide.• Available free to all via UK Open University

though other local versions may be available.

• Focused on participant webcams, has a presentation option but not so effective.

• One person speaks at a time so easy to hear and follow.

• Works well with lots of participants though normally a cap of 20/25

Everyone has it (almost) Very simple Educational support is growing.

• Ustream• Livestream• Blip.tv• Bambuser

All very simple to use from Webcam or even mobile phone. No special hardware needed though better the hardware better the quality.

Streaming could be used to share training sessions for teachers, classes for absent students, bad weather, school plays, religious services (where appropriate!)

Streams are often recorded so they can be played back later.

MFL Flashmeeting http://lmhtob.wikispaces.com/MFL+Flashmeeting

Led by teachers, agenda set by teachers, great professional development and seems like a social meeting.

www.teachmeet.org.uk An “unconference” anyone can sign up to

present an example of classroom practice for a 7 minute or a 2 minute slot.

Broadcast online using streaming. Relaxed atmosphere with time for

networking and if sponsorship available food and drink (often beer)
