About the music
Signature Moments began life as a series of twenty short piano pieces eachoccupying no more than a page of A4 landscape manuscript. Throughout August2011 they were released daily on the website of Sounding the Deep, a projectdevised by the composer Nigel Morgan in collaboration with the HullPhilharmonic Orchestra for the Cultural Olympiad 2012.
Since the advent of recording, musicians and listeners have tended to regard theCD as the definitive musical text and sadly stopped sounding the music by gettingtheir hands on it at the keyboard. This is what music lovers once did when a neworchestral work was published. They acquired the piano duet version, or indeed(as in Beethoven’s Symphonies, the piano trio version), and got to know the musicin a way that few people manage to do these days.
Nigel Morgan is very enthusiastic about making his orchestral and large ensemblemusic available in different and reduced scorings. These arrangements by PatrickBrandon have been commissioned in a similar spirit. Patrick was not only Nigel’steacher and mentor for some years but has edited many of Nigel’s compositionsfor publication. There really could hardly be anyone better to make thesearrangements!
Unlike the piano originals these four-part arrangements do have time-signaturesand conventional dynamics. They are imagined for a variety of possibleensembles and a guide to such possibilities can be found in the appendix to thisscore.
Performers should regard these pieces as starting points for their own versions.These could include their own bespoke arrangements – using Sibelius filesavailable on-line at soundingthedeep.co.uk. It may be a good idea to take a lookat the piano originals and read the detailed guide to how the music might bedeveloped further.
