Directing

Directing is necessaryIf organ or piano or guitar is difficult for the congregation to hear.

If the church is very long and wide.

On testimonial and challenging songs

When songs have rhythm and tempo changes or with fermatas

Directing is not necessary When the message of the hymn is designed to draw a person into deep, inner thought, and into an experience or personal communion between himself and God

If a song leader is not sure of his beats.

Set correct tempo and dynamics, and contrast through conducting.

Show definite attacks and releases, fermatas and tempo changes.

Every last note of the stanza must be held two or more beats longer.
