Weapons of War • Grenades—small missiles that contain explosives or

chemical agents and are thrown by hand or projected by a rifle.

Weapons of War • Machine Guns—Dominated WWI; were set up on tripods

and could fire over 600 rounds per minute; caused a massive amount of casualties.

Weapons of War • Poison Gas—Chlorine gas grenades were thrown or fired;

mustard gas was odorless and caused serious blisters externally and internally; both gases did a great deal of damage to soldiers and forced them to wear gas masks during the war.

Weapons of War • Tanks—Introduced by the British in 1916, tanks were bullet

proof and able to charge the enemy trenches. This was the first off road vehicle ever used in a war.

Weapons of War • Trench Mortars—A short tube designed to fire at a steep

angle; these mortar bombs fired straight down, which meant it could only land directly into the enemy’s trench.
