The National Endowment for the Humanities Turns 50

On September 29, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act into law. With that act the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) was created. The NEH:• Is an independent federal agency

• Promotes excellence in the humanities • Awards grants for top-rated proposals examined by panels of

independent, external reviewers. • Humanities studies include but are not limited to:

NEH grants have made a great impact on the

humanities in the past 50 years

• Literature• History• Philosophy • Linguistics

• Comparative religion

• Ethics• Theory & history of the arts• Archeology

1. Print the template we attached to this email that says: I love the Humanities because… (also available at http://www.neh.gov/50)

2. Write why you love the humanities in a large font with black marker (some examples are on the next slide)

3. Take a photo holding the piece of paper

4. On September 29th (Our anniversary!) at 1pm EDT post the photo on Twitter using the hashtag: #NEHturns50 and tag: @NEHgovOR If you don’t have access to a printer just post why you love the humanities using the #NEHturns50 and tag @NEHgov

5. Put a reminder in your calendar now to remember this date, Sept 29 at 1pm EDT!
