Desalination of water by means of reverse osmosis technologies
Sobek-Tec provides a modular equipment of high quality and
innovative plant technologies for small, medium and large
desalination performances. All systems are designed in units.
Drinking water capacities upto several thousand m³ per day
can be installed easily in building-block design.
Our basis technology to desalinate sea and brackish water is
the reverse osmosis principle. Every single reverse osmosis
rack and peripheral equipment like filter and dosing stations
are transportable equipment. Units may be erected in a dry
hall or insulated container and interconnected by piping and
cabling systems. Due to the modular design decentralised or
mobile drinking water distribution is possible saving expensive
pipe-line systems.

SOBEK-Tec provides all necessary equip-
ment and mashinery parts to produce drin-
king water from natural recources like
ground water, rivers, lakes and sea.
If ever possible feed water prefered is
taken from wells. Natural filtration by soil,
less or no need of chemical disinfection and
less problems with water contaminations are
advantages.
The more complex open intake from sea re-
quires offshore intake buildings , special
filtration units to get ride of jelly fish,
mussels, debry and other rubbish.
Chlorination to protect systems against
fouling and declorination to protect subse-
quent membranes against demages by
oxidants is required.

MEMBRANE PROCESSES
The separation of fluids and their
dissolved matter by means of
membranes is copied as a very
successful method of
nature.
Membranes are permeable to
certain substances and
molecules, others are held back
by same membrane.
The driving force for mass trans-
fer is the osmotic pressure. Sepa-
ration methods differ according to
treatment objectives and
membrane properties:
Reverese Osmosis (RO)
as a process to desalinate water;
often in combination with ion-
exchangers to soften water. The
RO-process separates a feed
volume into a low-salt permeat
and a saline concentrate. The
higher the salt content in feed
water, the more pressure energy
is necessary for the desalination.

pressures between 14 to 30 bar

■ Desalination of sea water with

Many areas, which are developed for tourism, suffer from scarcity of
natural drinking water resources. From experience one hotel guest
consumes approximately 200-300 Liter drinking water per day. Inten-
sive leisure facilities and gardens require additional water.
For hotels and resorts our modular sea water desalination systems
are ideal stand-alone solution to provide drinking water according to
WHO standards. Even if space is limited units can be set up in distri-
buted manner.

ENERGY RECOVERY
Desalination of ocean water requi-
res a hugh amount of electrical
energy. Feed water needs to be
pressurized in order to exceed the
osmotic pressure. Typical salt
contens between 35,000 and
45,000 ppm require operating
pressures upto 70 bar.
Whereas the drinking water frac-
tion, passes the membrane, leaves
the system at atmospheric pres-
sure, the saline concetrate still is
high pressurized. By means of
energy recovery devices 30% of
the energy can be reused. In prac-
tice two systems are common.
PRESSURE EXCHANGERS
Presssure energy from high con-
centrate-level is transfered to the
low pressure feed water stream
while both streams pass the pres-
sure exchanger device.
TURBINES
Pressurized concentrate drives a
pelton turbine which is mounted
with high pressure pump on same
shaft. The turbine transformes the
pressure energy and supports the
high pressure pump motor.

Barge
Barges for various capacities may cruise along a
coast line from port to port providing smaller
volumes of drinking. Drinking water is pumped from
the barge to a suitable storrage tank.
Barges are designed to provide small settlements
near the coast with fresh drinking water.
Jack-up
Jack-Up series are self-propelled vessels which
move to the position of desalination. On site the
Jack-up fixes its four legs on sea floor and lifts up
the plattform for operation. A Jack-Up can be fully
customized to owner’s specific requirements and
provide modern accommodation layout for the ope-
rating crew. The modular building-block design is
redundant system. For maintenance works or
during times of low water consumption
single trains can be taken out of operation without
shut down the total Installation. This guarantees a
high availability throughout the year.
Vessel
Vessels for various capacities produce large
drinking water volumes off shore. In a habour
drinking water is unloaded to sufficient storrage
tanks and drinking water distribution systems

As combination process of filtration, conditioning, desalina-
tion and disinfection SOBEK-Tec provides mobile systems
to produce drinking water from well, lake and surfacewater.
Systems are designed according to the applications.
