TAR Dark, sticky stuff that you find when

tobacco burns It sticks to cilia in trachea Stops them from working properly

CARBON MONOXIDE It is a colorless, odourless gas It binds to red blood cells and reduces

oxygen to your body Also found in car exhaust

NICOTINE It is a drug that speeds up nervous

system, heart and other organs It produces an ADDICTION, which

means you need to have it

Kills cilia and stops the movement of mucus

Decreases Oxygen to cells Creates Bronchitis, Emphysema and

Cancers

Bronchitis It occurs when mucus builds up in your

lungs Makes you cough lots You feel like you can’t breathe

Emphysema When the tissue in your lungs gets

destroyed by smoking You can’t get enough oxygen or get rid

of enough Carbon Dioxide

mouth cancer This can kill you
