The reality Not many smartphones

Low literacy levels

Cost of sending data is a disincentive

Smarter

water systems

via training, advice & software

Speech notes

Intro SeeSaw South Africa based company,

focussed on use of new technology (cellphones, google maps) in water sector

Do three things:• Training• Advice • Software

Opening slide (ii) Founded by a group of water people

with long experience in Africa – working with government, water providers, regulators

Also good links to NGOs and donors How to harness new technology in an

appropriate way, bearing in mind the incentives of key groups

Map/backend slide So, like everyone else, we have a

smartphones and a map This is all very well for collecting baseline

information But the truth is, we’re more focussed on

how you update any information over time – without needing guys on motorbikes - and how you design to fit the circumstances on the ground here in Africa

Literacy slide(stress Africa-based)

This is where being based in Africa is an advantage

We know literacy is a challenge, we know that smartphones are still expensive, we know that the cost of data (and even SMS) still a concern

Live testing ground in Cape Town where almost a million people live in informal settlements

2 Low literacy applications that plug into other systems

So, focussing on literacy challenges, two demos that help to address that issue

• SeeTell, which uses the phones people have, making missed calls

• Snapture, which relies on the fact that everyone can take a photo

Audience demo / Instructions slide

Hand out 6 cards 3 smartphones, three sheets Show instructions

Go through demo, show map slide, explain that results will appear there ...

Map/backend slide The results update here > come over and see it

afterwards

SeeTell > have a system that allows us to geo-locate issues even though the reports come from basic phones. Free to the user reporting ..

Receive reports by email, filter results, export – all the usual stuff

Not just ‘survey’ software – designed by water experts focussed on spotting patterns, trends, anomalies > who can assist with interpreting results

SeeSaw active largely in SADCbut moving north (Mapbox slide)

Given rural example here, but other uses > eg using it for river monitoring, urban fault reporting, oversight of maintenance

For instance now using SeeTell in Ghana to report maintenance issues around filtered water schemes and discussing the monitoring of urban standpipe services in Angola.

Snapture by guys standing knee deep in water and in full sun, mapping river infrastructure

SeeSaw South Africa-based company

• Training // Advice // Software

Develop software to suit local realities – designed to be integrated into government systems from outset

Two apps, SeeTell & Snapture with a user interfance simple enough my 5 year old can use them
