DECEMBER 2013E X P L O R E T H E C U L T U R E @SLFS
How long have you worked for SLFS?
I have worked with SLFS for four years. I started as a consultant and grant writer in 2010 and then was hired to be the full time development director in 2011.
What made you want to work for an organization so far from where you live? How did you hear about us?I met Tori and Amy Beth in 2006 as part of the Art House Convergence Leadership team. We worked together for 5 years to create and grow the Convergence as a national movement to organize independent cinemas and in 2009 launched an annual conference. At about this time my work fundraising for a capital campaign to build a cinema in my hometown in Washington State was complete. Tori asked me to join the SLFS team and help create the development department. We’ve accomplished so much working together these last four years. I’m really excited about how far SLFS has come and where we are heading in the future.
What draws you to film? Is it something you’re particularly excited about?
I’ve been a film fan ever since I was a child. My parents often took me to Sunday afternoon classic movies run by our local film society in Central Pennsylvania. So I grew up with Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart and Astaire & Rogers. Later I graduated to Woody Allen and Mel Brooks. These days I watch lots of documentaries and foreign films and attend as many festivals as I can. My husband is in the movie business and teaches film so there’s no shortage of film viewing and discussion in my life.
Could you share some of your favorite films/actors/ genres?I’m a huge Krzysztof Kieslowski fan. I watch his three colors trilogy at least once a year. I have a soft spot for Claire Denis’ 35 Shots of Rum and pretty much anything by Nicole Holofcener, The Coen Brothers or Wes Anderson.
Salt Lake Film Society is a non-profit organization and you’re the point person on raising money; I’m a little afraid to ask, but what has your year been like?2013 has been a fabulous year for SLFS. We faced the biggest fundraising challenge in our 13-year history, raising $700,000 to meet the Digital Deadline and convert all of our screens to digital technology. We are humbled by the groundswell of generous support that has come from every segment of our community. Because of the huge community support for SLFS we are poised to reach our goal by the end of the year. With one month to go, we have under $100,000 left to raise and have converted 5 of our 7 screens. I can’t thank everyone enough for their support for SLFS in our time of need.
What do you like best about SLFS?I’m happy to be part of such an amazing team of hardworking people who are committed to keeping quality independent film alive and well in Salt Lake City. I believe film exhibition nonprofits like SLFS are more important than ever and that keeping
diverse and lesser known voices in film accessible is vital to educating and engaging citizens and creating healthy communities.
What are your hopes for our organization’s future? This is an exciting time for SLFS. As we evolve into a leading non-profit arts organization we plan to take an even more active role in cross pollinating all areas of the
arts and pursue creative ways to collaborate with organizations in the community.
SLFS provides such an important service to Salt Lake City that I
want everyone to know how vital it is. I truly believe that local independent cinemas have the power to change lives. Film educates, entertains and opens our
eyes and hearts in ways that make our communities stronger. I hope more people will come to appreciate just how important art and film in particular is to understanding ourselves as
human beings. Film creates common experiences that bring us together in community. Utah is lucky to have SLFS.

DECEMBER 2013
Tacita Dean is one of the most celebrated British artists of the past two decades. Her newest
film, JG, was shot in Utah’s desert, Great Salt Lake, and Salt Lake City’s Hogle Zoo. It takes
its point of departure from the physical and thematic interplay between a work of science fiction
and a work of Land art: J. G. Ballard’s short story “The Voices of Time” (1960) and Robert Smith-
son’s Spiral Jetty (1970). In a series of conversations with Ballard prior to his death in 2009, Dean
was encouraged to treat Spiral Jetty as a mystery that might be solved through a filmic inves-
tigation into the nature of history and material. Employing her patented technique of “aperture
gate masking,” in which she uses stencil-like masks to alternately cover up and re-expose her
film, Dean transfers images from one place to another, generating visual and conceptual juxtapo-
sitions within the space of the individual 35mm frame. Interspersing salt-encrusted landscapes,
machines, and animals with a host of abstract shapes and voids, the film’s treatment of time and
place parallels the effects of Ballard’s fiction and Smithson’s artwork.
JG was commissioned by Arcadia University Art Gallery and funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, and is being presented at the UMFA in collaboration with Salt Lake Film Society.
