Stop putting the brakes on your life.

That yellow caution light? Disable it

for a while. Go full speed ahead on

a project that seems pointless. Yes,

you can learn to read music just for

fun. Yes, you can write the book you

think no one will buy. Yes, you can

stop stalling and look for a new job.

Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Skopein

Worry less about crashing and more

about being stuck in cruise control.

Recant “can’t.” What if you never step

out of line? Never gamble your peace

of mind? Never trouble the world?

Life will just climb through the window

if you try to lock the door on it. It

wants your Yes, your Now, your Full

Monty. Out there, you’ll nd danger

and dragons, detours and disappoint-

ments, but it’s also full of magic and

miracles, joy and juice. Go get some.

A mission to build a colony on Mars is underway. More than 200,000 applied for the

adventure. From that, 1,058 candidates were selected. I know one of them. Maybe you

do, too. Jan Millsapps, a writer and filmmaker, was my professor at the University of

South Carolina when I was in grad school. Yes, she’s one of those hoping to relocate

to the fourth planet from the sun. As I follow her Facebook updates, I wonder if she

will. First, she’d have to be selected for the next round, which involves

some sort of simulated life-on-Mars reality TV-ish experience.

Then, she’d have to leave loved ones for a trip from which

she doesn’t expect to return. We all have our dream

adventures, and I guess there’s only one person who

has to think they make sense. Otherwise, we might not

have had Amelia Earhart, Nellie Bly or Sally Ride. This

month, you can read in our pages about Earth-bound

adventures, maybe even dream up one of your own. And

if you’re curious about Jan’s next chapter, keep tabs on her

through Twitter @JanOnMars.

FIND YOUR SENSE OF

A-D-V-E-N-T-U-R-EAs simple as opening a book.

Or closing a chapter.

Do people still y around the world in hot air balloons?

Very funny, I get it now. We’re inside adventure!

Exciting times to be alive.

Never say “I can’t,” “I won’t ever,” or “It’s not possible.”

Time to buy roller skates, y a kite or have an exotic vinegar-tasting party.

Usually an adventure is an undertaking that is bold.

Risky.

Exciting.

May is the month to do something you can’t believe you did.

My boots are constantly itching to find the perfect place to live. Like Goldilocks, I’m always looking for “just right.” A place I’d recognize instantly, where I’d feel at home in my body, at peace in my soul,

at one with the landscape. It’s not that I think my life would be better elsewhere, but that I’d finally belong somewhere. But this yearning seems to me innately human. Aren’t we always scanning the horizon, straining to catch a glimpse of heaven?

When it’s probably the ground under our feet and the people we carry in our hearts, no matter where we are.

home is a haven I hate to
