Remember these days. The slap of ip ops.

A dog asleep on a porch in the heat of the

day. The splash of a cannonball dive. The

impossible blue of the water. The distant

murmur of waves and voices on a beach.

Days that move with the rhythm of tides

instead of time. Wet bathing suits on the

line. The lawnmower next door. Surprise

thunderstorms that cool the panting August

afternoons. Faded tans and tees. Sprinklers

inging rainbows into the sunlight. One

more road trip before routine rules again.

Eating outdoors on paper plates. A battered,

beloved straw hat. Leftover sand on the car

mats. This moment is real. This life is now.

Raise your glass—it’s the last recess before

the bell rings on a summer state of mind.

HOPEYOU ARE HAVING

A GREAT

august2014

Last month, the skirt! staff got together on Columbia’s Main Street for First

Thursday. We sat in the newly-opened Michael’s Cafe, across from the still-feels-

new-to-me Nickelodeon theater, with its splendid marquis. We could barely eat

our pizza, so many people were walking by and dropping in to say hello. This is

our RE issue, and I guess that is what a REinvented Main Street looks like. I’ve

been around long enough to remember when Main Street was a place to shop,

with more than one department store. Then, Main became the place I only went

when I needed a wig for Halloween. Now, I head there nearly every Saturday for

the Soda City farmers’ market and come back to eat, see movies,

visit the art museum, shop and more on the days in be-

tween. I’m glad to have been around long enough to see

it re-invigorated—thanks to people with the imagina-

tion, intelligence and guts to make it so.

Kiehl’s—the skincare brand

founded 160 years ago in an

East Village apothecary—is our

go-to for so many reasons: all

natural ingredients, elegantly

simple packaging, its customer

reward for recycling program,

and charity work.

It’s just a bonus that its

products are created,

formulated and produced

in the United States.

Informal office poll: The one

must-have Kiehl's product is

the ubiquitous lip balm. We all

have at least one in our bag,

desk or car!

The new product we can’t quit: Super Multi-Corrective Cream, powered by jasmonic acid to lift, rm, sculpt and smooth for more youthful looking skin.

Most of the prod-ucts are unisex, so they’re perfect for minimalist couples sharing small bathroom counter space, and they’re chock-full of natu-ral ingredients like lavender, calendula, blue algae and rose artica.

Firefly Peach Moonshine Margarita (makes one drink)

Firefly Peach Moonshine

Orange juice

Sweet & sour mix

Splash of water

Give it a shake and drink up!

From Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina (a.k.a., “our backyard”), Firefly Moonshine is “an authentic southern spirit that delivers a raw and rustic drinking experience.”

Firefly’s Moonshine comes in flavors from White Lightning (100 proof raw corn whiskey), Strawberry, Cherry, Caramel and Apple Pie, but we thought this one was just peachy for summer.

Raspberry Honey Mustard Pretzel

Dip

Robert Rothschild Farm's

The avor of raspberries, clover honey and tangy mustard are artfully blended to provide a distinct avor.

FIREFLY'S PEACH

We loved it with fresh baked soft pretzels, but it’s so good it would make pretzels from a bag taste fancy. Get it at Whole Foods and other major grocery stores, or order online at RobertRothschild.com.

This pretzel dip is all natural, kosher

and gluten free. Great for spicing up any chicken, egg or potato salad!

Historically, moonshine could be

anything that was or is distilled illegally.

We still call it “moon-shine” even though it’s

legal now!

If there could be such a thing, this is “sipping moonshine,” and we see no reason why we couldn’t drink right out of the Mason jar, just like Gram and Gramps did back in the day.
