Types of Moisturising Agents
Emollients
Humectants
Occludents
Miscellaneous
Provide an “oily” film over the surface of the skin.
– Trap water, swell the stratum corneum and close the cracks.
Emollients also penetrate into the upper layers of the stratum corneum
– Mimic the barrier effect of the lamellar lipids.
– Thus restoring the epidermal barrier.
Prevent penetration of irritants and allergens
Light liquid paraffin, safflower oil.
Emollients
Humectants
Are hygroscopic substances
– They absorb water from their environment (the product) and promote water retention.
Na+ PCA
Polyols – glycerin, sorbitol
Glycols – butylene glycol, propylene glycol
Occludents form a barrier film on the skin.
Restricts the escape of water vapour from the skin, trapping water in the skins uppermost layers and protecting against moisture loss.
Petrolatum, waxes, shea butter, lanolin.
Occludents
Miscellaneous
Skin conditioning agents that are used to create special effects on the skin.
– Enhance the appearance of dry or damaged skin.
– Adhere to the skin to reduce flaking and restore suppleness.
A good Moisturiser will contain an effective combination of moisturising agents
A good Moisturiser is one that the customer / patient will use
