Kris’ Kolumn
Welcome to 2016!!
Ok, so El Nino has produced some snow for us to play in.
But, what Mother Nature has given us, Mother Nature can
take away !
So, let’s be sure to get out there and make hay with the
snow!!
Many thanks to everyone for renewing their memberships, or becoming new members, or returning to the fold. Craig says we continue to increase our numbers each year. I hope that means we’re doing something right. Certainly, our members (and former members) are having more fun on the hill as well as back here in the big city. And, how about our racing team?? With more members, it’s more important to plan ahead. So, Lance is hot on the trail for the same location (if you like a great view of the setting sun over the water) for this year’s Annual Dinner-Dance in May. Like all festive events, this one needs a theme. So, please contact Lance, Sarah, or Cynthia with your ideas! Ideas for donations for the raffle and silent auction are also gratefully accepted. Each year we have a little change-over in the Board – all of us who make it possible for all of you to have so much fun within the Long Beach Ski Club. Please contact Brian if you’d like to nominate yourself or someone else for any position. While we’d like to put peoples’ names on the ballot, there will always be space for a write-in. When you receive or read this newsletter, some of us might be in Colorado, with Shep and Tara enjoying the best snow Aspen has had in several years.
SKI BREEZE FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 7
Last year, neither Telluride nor Aspen had any snow in January. Half way thru this January, they have each had more than 5 feet! Hopefully, the rain that is supposed to hit San Francisco at the end of January will make it to Aspen with a good-sized dump! In January, Roberto set us up in 2 condos in Mammoth. Let’s get our forms and checks in quickly, and maybe we can get 3 or 4 condos in February! Read, read, read this newsletter. If you like to travel, you’ll love Sarah’s column. If you like journalism, you’ll like the way Cynthia pulls this newsletter together. When you see Ziba, please thank her for keeping the books straight!! And, when you see Dana, please thank him for helping keep our website in order…. And Cynthia, too! Lastly, our General Meeting for February at Ecco’s will be on the 2nd Wednesday, February 10, as some of us will be busy skiing the hills around Aspen, and searching out the night life. Cheers!

“Smooth Jazz Cruisin”
Well…she says she’s out of the country again…,
This time she’s on a Smooth Jazz Cruise in the Caribbean… Some of the BIG names on the cruise are George Benson, Peabo Bryson, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Brian Culbertson, Eric Marienthal, and Boney James for any of you Smooth Jazz fans…that’s just to name a few of the entertainers who will perform during the cruise.
The cruise leaves from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and then proceeds to the Grand Caymans, Key West, and a couple of other islands plus Cozumel, Mexico. The weather is supposed to be in the 80’s, so I’m packing light. The cruise line is Holland America and they run several specialty cruises out of this port including; 80’s Cruises, Country Western, Traditional Jazz, Gospel, Latin, and Star Trek. So if Smooth Jazz is not your thing, there are other options if you enjoy cruising and concerts. I’ll share some photos and report on the experience next month. Until then…Adios amigos!
Cheers! Sarah

Craig’s Crag … Membership Report
By Craig Gibson
Great news! Our club is growing! Please note some interesting facts:
Long Beach Ski Club Membership
Year LBSC Membership Total
2013-14 62
2014-15 71
2015-16 80
These are certainly numbers we can all be proud of!
Race Report
On January 9, we were scheduled to have two GS races- one in the morning and the
other in the afternoon. The morning race went as scheduled. Midway into the
afternoon race, deteriorating weather conditions forced the Mammoth Race
Department to pull the course. Since all racers did not have a chance to participate, it
was determined that the afternoon race results would be nullified. Whether this GS
race is rescheduled remains to be seen. For the time being, our next race will be on
February 20 and will be slalom.
Not only do we have more club members; we have more club members on our race
team as well. We were tickled pink to have three newbie racers: Eric Hartman, Nia
Hartman and Dennis Potts. As per ULLR regulations, these racers were only allowed to
earn a maximum of one point for their first race but now that they have established
handicaps they will be able to compete for their fair share of points in their respective
classes.
Welcome to the team!
SKI BREEZE FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 7
Here are the results of our first race:
ULLR 1, January 9, 2016
Name Skill Place Points
Steve Brown 3 Vet Men 1 8
Ken Kawahara 4 Vet Men 1 4
Brian Maloney 6 Vet Men 1 9
Kris Flaig 6 Vet Men 3 0
Craig Gibson 7 Vet Men 1 6
Roberto Tovar 7 Vet Men 2 4
Eric Hartman First Time Racer 1 1
Dennis Potts First Time Racer 3 1
Nia Hartman First Time Racer 4 1
ULLR 1 Race Results by Club
Place Club Number of Racers Points
1 Aerospace 13 69
2 Century City 9 42
3 Long Beach 9 37
4 Four Seasons 4 18
The biggest surprise of ULLR 1 was the performance of Brian Maloney. Not only did he
garner the most points for our club, he got a double strike and will be saying bye bye to
Level 6. Even more surprising is that he did so without wearing what his wife Lisa refers
to as “that red body suit thingy”.

Mammoth Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar
For those of you that were not in Mammoth on the weekend trip of January 7th through 10th, you certainly missed a great weekend! The conditions that weekend were the best I've seen at Mammoth in 2 or 3 years and it certainly will get better! There were 9 members in the club condos, the most I've had since I've handled this job! Attending were Art Husami, Barbara Ellner, Lori Maynard, Catherine Singer, Jodi Hein, Russ Walters, Dennis Potts, Kris Flaig and myself.
There was an impressive turnout for the Saturday club dinner of club members who either own condos or were renting condos in Mammoth Lakes. About 20 or so members were in attendance. The club and I thank you for attending the function! I already have 4 members signed up for February, so don't be late signing up for the trip!

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl
The highlight of January was the
club’s trip to Mammoth where our
LBSC club racers had great success!
The LBSC party at the club condo in
Snowflower was awesome and we all
had a great time!
Over 20 attended and Roberto and
Art were gracious hosts!
The appetizers were delicious and the lasagna was Von’s best. New member Brian
Maloney, made chili from scratch which he slowed cook all day at the condo where I
was staying with Ron Scholz, Dave Lopez, and Brian.
SKI BREEZE FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 7
The snow was fantastic, but Saturday
we had an ice storm and we couldn’t
keep our goggles clear.
Sunday was perfect with blue sky,
lots of sun and no wind.
Consequently, the skiing was
phenomenal!
SKI BREEZE FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 7
There will be no February social event
because of our next Mammoth week ski
trip and Valentine’s Day.
For March we will have a St. Patrick’s
Day party at Brian’s and Lisa’s home.
And in April, we will have wine tasting at
a new venue in Belmont Shore, called
The Urban Table.
So, watch for flyers in the next month Ski
Breeze!
