• Shows readers how other cultures perceive American culture and how they adapt it to their own– Sudha and Anju see girls wearing American
clothing, rather than saris– Girls in the streets don’t follow traditions in
regards to how they act around men– Americanized movies – Anju moves to America and her original
thoughts on it do not match the reality
• Gives a lot of detail about Indian culture and makes it easy for the reader to learn– Shows a traditional upper-caste Indian family– Graduation/party– The process of an arranged marriage– The actual marriage celebration

• People in different caste’s (social classes) don’t really interact and do not marry each other– The girls aren’t allowed to interact with people
on the street– They must marry men from the same social
caste and with a good, reputable family

• There must be a bride viewing for the potential groom in the event of an arranged marriage– The groom and his parents must deem the
bride appropriate for marriage

• Indian food– Lots of spices– Fruit– Vegetables– Rice– Lentils
• Certain foods must be prepared in certain ways and with some precaution
