Introduction to Shanghai • Shanghai is the biggest city and the commercial and financ

ial center of China, with a land area of 6,340 square kilometers and a population of 20 million people.

• As China 's most populous metropolis, Shanghai has been snoozing for the past few decades. Now, it is more alive than ever. It is an entrepreneur city of 2010 World Expo.

• Also, Shanghai is a popular tour city with many unique sights such as the Lujiazui financial center, the Bund, Shanghai World Financial Center and so on.

History of Shanghai • take shape during the Songze Culture, approximately 5,000

years ago.

• first officially named as Shanghai during the Song Dynasty, when it began to rise as a trading port.

• became a foreign concession after Opium War in 1843.

• proclaimed as a ''special municipality'' because of its significance to the economy of the Republic of China in 1927.

• the foreign concessions in Shanghai were returned to China in 1945 after Anti-Japanese War.

• liberated from Kuomingtang(Nationalist Party) rule on May 27th ,1949 and CCP controlled the city.

• commercial revival took place in Shanghai with the advent of Deng Xiaopeng's open door policy in 1978
