Word types (Part of Speech)

Different types of words can be used to make your writing more interesting and easier to read. You need to know when to use them and how to spot them.

Elements of English sentences

Subject （主語）

The person or thing that does the action of the verb

John came home. The store opens at 10:00.

Verb （動詞）

A kind of word which shows what a person or thing is doing or the state it is in or what is happening to it

I walk to school every day. I like chocolate very much.

Object （目的語）

The direct object is the person or thing affected by the action of the verb

I bought the book yesterday. The indirect object is the person or

thing who benefits from the action or who receives something

He lent his brother some money.

Complement （補語）

A word or phrase that follows a linking verb and describes the subject or object

My father is a dentist. I found this book interesting.

Modifier （修飾語）

A word or a phrase which describes or limits the meaning of another word and which is independent of other grammatical elements

There are twenty students in this room.

He studies English every day.
