Sensor Web Technology – Interoperable Delivery of Copernicus In-Situ Observation Data 2

In-Situ Observation Data• Existing in-situ earth observation networks deliver a multitude of

in-situ data capturing the state of the earth

• Examples: Hydrology, air quality, ocean sciences, etc.

• Data sets are of high value for scientists and other stakeholders

• Different data delivery methods and formats interoperability needed

In-Situ Observation Data in INSPIRE• Guidelines for the use of Observations & Measurements and Sensor Web

Enablement-related standards in INSPIRE (D2.9)

• Technical Guidance for implementing download services using the OGC Sensor Observation Service and ISO 19143 Filter Encoding

• Now officially endorsed as INSPIRE Technical Guidance documents:

– Guidelines for O&M (D2.9):http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/id/document/tg/d2.9-o&m-swe

– Technical Guidance SOS as a download service:http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/id/document/tg/download-sos

Sensor Web Application Examples• Hydrology

– WaterML 2.0 and SOS 2.0 Hydrology Profile

– Additional functionality for hydrological applications (e.g. querying which time series are available)

– Implementations by KISTERS and 52°North

– Example use case implemented by GEOWOW:

• Discharge data managed by the GRDC

• Validation of prediction data of the ECMWF

Sensor Web Application Examples• Air Quality

– Member states have an obligation to report air quality data to the EEA

– Integration of heterogeneous data deliveries

– Solution: Use a specific O&M profile

– SOS-based e-Reporting workflow

– Delivery of near-real time data and yearly data

– Implemented by EEA, Belgium, Lithuania, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom

Sensor Web Application Examples• Ocean Sciences

– Several projects and observation networks

– Many types of sensors and platforms

– Metadata, observation data, data access

– Sensor plug an play

– Aim: Define common best practices and profiles to increase interoperability work in progress

Sensor Web Technology – Interoperable Delivery of Copernicus In-Situ Observation Data 9

Sensor Web Application Examples• Renewable Energy

– Operators/owners of in-situ pyranometric stations

– In-situ measurements for site selection, for commissioning of large-scale solar power plants, and for monitoring and forecasting production of these plants

– Long-term data with high resolution
