How did S.E. Hinton's career start?

Her career Began after the final draft of her book the The Outsiders was published. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1950 and lived there most of her life.

She wrote books about troubled young men when

she was a teenager.

She began writing at the age of 15 and has written

many award winning books (Ex. The outsiders,

Rumble Fish, and That was then, this is now.

What inspired S.E. Hinton to

write “The

Outsiders?”

S.E. Hinton was inspired by two gangs at her high

school called the Greaser’s and the Soc’s when she witnessed a

beating between one of her greaser friend it

inspired her to write “The Outsiders”

She also wrote it to calm herself about her fathers

illness and her anger from when her friend got beat

up, because the Soc’s didn’t like the way their

hair was combed

She began to read juvenile delinquent books and do lots of research for

it but she already explored them personally

Due to the publicity and fame of the outsiders

Hinton went into a 3 year long writers block.

S.E Hintons boyfriend got tired of seeing her

depressed all the time so he convinced her to start

writing again.

He started by making her write two pages a each day if she wanted to go

anywhere. This eventually resulted in a book, “That Was Then, This Is Now.”

What did S.E Hinton achieve in her career?

• With her first book, “The Outsiders”, it was ranked

as a classic, and is still widely read and is also

known as one of the most important books on the

field.

• One of her other books, “That Was Then, This Is Now.”, also became a

movie and was discovered by Paramount Pictures.

• Hinton wrote many of her books in college at the University of Tulsa. She

studied to become a teacher. She later then

also, wrote her next book, “The Rumble Fish.”
