PROJECT ABSTRACT
A student center can be seen as a very broad conglomeration of spaces that fit into one building. There is not one direct usage, but several spaces that have to work together while simultaneously working independent of each other. The aspect of tying this diversity together is something we wanted to base our conceptual development on. With this, we take the approach of providing an aggregate to the university at a macro and micro level. The design seeks to provide a space that lives within the very heart of campus that will help bring the surrounding buildings together by providing way finding & visual connections through the site. Internally, we strive to bring the variety of programmatic spaces together as the architecture becomes the tying agent of the aggregation of interior spaces, as well as the tying agent that blurs the
boundaries of the envelope. As of the first trip to the campus of South Carolina State University [SCSU] the current way finding and visual/physical connecting of the campus is something that could be improved. As is the way in which the current student center is laid out; there are conglomerations of pieces that do not adequately work together to provide collective spaces.
The new design for the SCSU student center will seek to provide the aggregate to the campus core that will both visually & psychically establish readability & legibility to provide a connective environment to the campus. Our approach is going to facilitate the idea that the campus happens through the student center & throughout the student center.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
‘THROUGH’ RESPONDING TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE SITE AND SURROUNDING CONTEXT, WE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE CURRENT STUDENT CENTER SITS IN THE EXACT MIDDLE OF CAMPUS. AS THE CAMPUS SURROUNDS THE SITE 360 DEGREES, ENDLESS CONNECTIONS ARE HAPPENING. WE ENVISION THE NEW STUDENT CENTER TO BE PERMEABLE AND ALLOW FOR ALL CAMPUS CONNECTIONS.
‘THROUGHOUT’ WHILE BRINGING MANY DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS AND ACTIVITIES THROUGH THE SITE, WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT THAT PROVIDES PROGRAMMED SPACES THAT WILL ALIGN WITH A DIVERSE, SOMETIMES CONFLICTING PROGRAM. EACH SPACE WILL MAINTAIN ITS CHARACTER AND INDIVIDUALITY WHILE STILL BEING CONNECTED TO THE WHOLE.
S.C.S.U. CORE CAMPUSCAMPUS CONNECTIONS ARE FORMED THROUGH THE SITE OF THE PROPOSED STUDENT CENTER. AS AN EXTENSION OF THE CURRENT PLAZA TO THE EAST, THE TACTILE NATURE OF THE BRICK PAVERS ARE CONTINUED THROUGH THE PEDESTRIAN PATHWAYS THAT PERMEATE THE BUILDING’S COURTYARD. THE COURTYARD SEEKS TO CREATE A NUCLEUS FOR SITE ACTIVITY, BOTH OPEN TO THE ELEMENTS AND SHELTERED.
