Scotland Winter Skills Courses

So what are these winter skills courses all about?

• Teach you some fundamental skills needed to safely mountaineer in winter conditions

• Give you an opportunity to get out in the winter with a professional guide.

• Have a great time• Encourage members to make a debut in the

wonderful world of winter mountaineering.

Beginner Course

Covers?

• Moving efficiently and safely over snow, ice and mixed terrain using ice axes and crampons

• Avalanche risk assessment• Route choice and navigation• Emergency shelters• Use of equipment• Weather

Experience Needed?

None!

Intermediate/Advanced Course

Covers?

• 2 Day guided snowhole expedition• One day probably tailored to the experience

of the group

Experience Needed?

Very little, small amount of experience with crampons

and ice axes

Dates:

• Intermediate 2nd to the 4th January– Drive up on the 1st – Drive home the evening of the 4th or arrange your

own accommodation and stay for longer! • Beginner 4th to the 6th January– Drive up on the 3rd – Return the evening of the 6th

Accommodation:

Run by:

• Pure Outdoor, owned and run by Guy Wilson, ex LSMC chair

Costs:

• Each course will cost around £30 including accommodation (prices to be confirmed) which is highly subsidised!

• Petrol will be about £40 each

Equipment needed:

• Warm clothes and lots of them (including warm gloves)!

• Waterproofs • Back pack to put it all in (a big pack needed for

the intermediate course)• Stiff boots!• Bivi bag (intermediate course only)

Equipment needed:

• If you don’t have any of this equipment try and borrow it or get some advice before buying.

• Everything else can be borrowed off the club
