FRICTION

The force of friction or simply friction is that force which opposes the motion of an object over another object in contact with it

Friction plays a vital role in our daily life. Without friction we are handicap:

Advantages application of Friction

Due to friction we are able to walk on the surface of the Earth

The brakes applied in automobiles work only due to friction

friction helps to transmit power from the motors and engine to other machines by making use of belts and clutches.

•Nails, screws and the wooden boards are held together due to force of friction

The fibers of thread or rope are held together due to force of friction

•Friction can also be used for making fire

In overcoming the friction, a lot of energy is wasted in the form of heat. Friction causes wear and tear of the moving parts

Due to friction, speed of automobiles cannot be increased beyond a certain limit., also engines of automobiles consume more fuel which is a money loss

Effects of friction. resistance to motion

heat generation

Wear

wear is sideways displacement of material from original position on a solid surface performed by the action of another surface

How lubricants can be used to reduce friction?

Lubricant

In general, a lubricant is something that lessens or prevents friction. A lubricant is some substance such as oil, capable of reducing friction, heat, and wear when introduced to provide a protective film that separates the two rubbing surfaces and reduces the level of friction in the two rubbing surfaces.
