SERVANTHOOD: THE ROAD TO GREATNESS

MARK 10:35-45

35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came

up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask

of You.”

36 And He said to them, “What do you want

Me to do for you?”

MARK 10:35-45

MARK 10:35-45

37 They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one

on Your right and one on Your left, in

Your glory.”

MARK 10:35-45

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know

what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I

drink, or to be baptized with the

baptism with which I am baptized?”

MARK 10:35-45

39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I

drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I

am baptized.

40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those

for whom it has been prepared.”

MARK 10:35-45

41 Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.

MARK 10:35-45

42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are

recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord

it over them; and their great men exercise authority over

them.MARK 10:35-45

43 But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your

servant;

MARK 10:35-45

44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

MARK 10:35-45

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be

served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom

for many.”

MARK 10:35-45

GOD IS LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WITH A

SERVANT’S HEART.

MARK 10:35-37

35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came

up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask

of You.”

36 And He said to them, “What do you want

Me to do for you?”

MARK 10:35-37

MARK 10:35-37

37 They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one

on Your right and one on Your left, in

Your glory.”

MATTHEW 20:20-21(NASB)

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to

Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making

a request of Him.

MATTHEW 20:20-21(NASB)

21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command

that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine

may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.”

1. A self-serving heart

prays uninformed prayers.

MARK 10:38

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know

what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I

drink, or to be baptized with the

baptism with which I am baptized?”

2. A self-serving heart

wants to bypass servanthood for

leadership.

3. A self-serving heart is

easily camouflaged.

41 Hearing this, the ten began to feel

indignant with James and John.

MARK 10:41

GREATNESS IN GOD’S EYES IS MEASURED BY

SERVICE TO OTHERS.

1. The one who is first must be the greater servant.

44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

MARK 10:44

2. There is a cost to servanthood.

3. Christians do not lead like the world.

JESUS IS THE PREMIERE EXAMPLE

OF GREATNESS BECAUSE HE IS THE PREMIERE EXAMPLE OF SERVANTHOOD.

5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the

disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel

with which He was girded.

JOHN 13:5-10

6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my

feet?”

JOHN 13:5-10

7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but

you will understand hereafter.”

JOHN 13:5-10

8 Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash

my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do

not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

JOHN 13:5-10

9Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also

my hands and my head.”

JOHN 13:5-10

10 Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs

only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all

of you.”

JOHN 13:5-10

21 When Jesus had said this, He became troubled

in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.”

JOHN 13:21-26

22 The disciples beganlooking at one another, at

a loss to know of which one He was speaking.

JOHN 13:21-26

23 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus

loved.

JOHN 13:21-26

24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, and

said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is

speaking.”

JOHN 13:21-26

25 He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

JOHN 13:21-26

26 Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I

shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He

took and *gave it to Judas, the son of Simon

Iscariot.  JOHN 13:21-26

Dr. Charles Stanley said: “When believers finally realize that our calling is to serve—not merely to seek our own interests—then we will have an irresistible impact on this world.”
