SATKHIRA FLOOD SITUATION-2011

SHORT BRIEFING ON

CAUSES OF FLOOD AND DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

Rishilpi Development Project

INTRODUCTIONBangladesh is situated in the south Asian sub-continent. Because of its unique geographical location and topography, it is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. Approximately 20 to 25% of Bangladesh’s territory is inundated during the monsoon season. Such flooding provides fertile agricultural land and the floodplains in the country are densely populated and intensely utilized. On the other hand, at least 50 to 70% of the country’s territory is exposed to intermittent extreme flooding that has far-reaching negative impacts on the national economy..

SATKHIRA : CAUSE OF FLOOD

The heavy monsoon downpour, and onrush water from upstream (Jessore area) by synchronization of flood-peaks of the major rivers are generally considered to be the main causes of the floods.

SATKHIRA FLOOD : UNDERLYING CAUSE

Some underlying factors also deserve serious consideration as possible contributors to the recent floods: • Climate change and Global warming• Change in the base level of the rivers due to

local sea level rise and subsidence,River bed aggradations due to siltation anddamming of rivers,

• Soil erosion due to unwise tilling practices,• deforestation in the upstream region,• Unplanned embankment for shrimp culture • Population growth
