BobMiller,PresidentandCEOAlbertson’s250EParkcenterBlvdBoise,ID83706-3999 September23,2015Re:BisphenolA(BPA)andotherChemicalsinCannedFoodDearMr.Miller:WeareconsumeradvocateswhoareworkingwithmajorretailersacrosstheUnitedStatestohelpidentifyandreplacedangerouschemicalsineverydayproductswithsafersubstitutes.Our“MindtheStore”campaignisaprojectofSaferChemicals,HealthyFamilies,anationalcoalitionofmorethan450health-mindedorganizations.Wearewritingnowtolearnmoreaboutthechemicalsinyourcannedfoodlinings.BisphenolA(BPA)isachemicalofhighconcernthatwehaveflaggedforpriorityactionontheHazardous100+ListofChemicalsofHighConcern(seehttp://saferchemicals.org/chemicals/).ConsumerdemandforBPA-freefoodpackagingcontinuestogrowasthebodyofscientificresearchhighlightingthehazardsofbisphenolA(BPA)atextremelylowdosesexpands.However,BPAreplacementscouldthemselvesbeachemicalormaterialofconcernthathasnotbeenadequatelytestedforsafety,whichcausesusgreatconcern.Thisunderscorestheneedforretailerstoadoptcomprehensivechemicalpoliciestoidentify,disclose,eliminateandsafelysubstitutechemicalssuchasBPA.TheMindtheStorecampaignplanstoco-releaseanationalreportinlateNovemberinformingthepublic,thepressandpolicymakersaboutthecurrentstateofthecannedfoodsectorregardingthecompositionoffoodcanliningsinuse.WeareparticularlyinterestedinbetterunderstandingthelandscapeoftheuseofbisphenolA(BPA)versusnon-BPAalternativestolinecannedfoods.Asapartofthisreport,ourcolleagueswiththeEcologyCenter’sHealthyStuff.orgprojectaretestingalargeselectionofcannedfoodliningstoidentifywhereBPAand/orBPAalternativesarebeingusedincannedfoodacrossthecountry.WearealsosurveyingmajorfoodbrandsandretailerstoassesstheirpositiononBPAandalternativesincannedfood.
