What are giraffes Giraffes are the tallest animals on the earth
Their name comes from a word that means ‘one who walks fast’
Long ago people thought Giraffes were cross between a leopard and a camel they called them camelopads
Habitat
Giraffes are mainly found in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. Giraffes were once common in dryer parts of Africa such as Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia. They live on Savannah, grasslands with a few trees and rocks. During the dry season the ground is dry and the savannah turns a golden yellow. When it rains the Savannah turns green.
Giraffes Behavior and facts
A new born calf can stand up and run within an hour of birth
Giraffes can gallop up to at the speed of 60km a hour and a calf can go faster
Giraffes Description
Giraffes have two horns, eyes, four legs, hooves and knee
pads. A nostril, fur, neck mane, ears and a 21cm tongue !
They have a number of bony lumps on its head
