Dalí, un estudiante traviesoWhile in Madrid, Dalí became known

for his excentric outfits, such as a disproportionately large tie and a cape that dragged the ground.

Dalí did not get along with his teachers, and he was expelled twice.

He never took his final exams, because he didn’t think that any of the teachers were qualified to examine his work.

Influencias artísticas

Dalí went to Paris in 1926, where he met Picasso, for whom he had a great deal of respect.

Picasso’s influence is seen in many of Dalí’s paintings.

In 1929 Dalí joined a group of surrealists living in Paris.

El surrealismo

The founder of surrealism was Andre Breton.

Breton thought that all the world’s problems were caused by rational thinking.

In Breton’s opinion, rational thinking is what led to World War I.

El surrealismo

Instead of rational thinking, surrealism focuses on the subcon-scious mind.

According to Breton, dreams and fantasy should be expressed without editing.

El surrealismo

Both Breton and Sigmund Freud influenced Dalí.

Some years after Dalí joined the group of surrealists, Breton rejected him, accusing him of supporting fascism, of excessive, selfish publicity and of financial greed.

En sus propias palabras

“At the age of 3 I wanted to be a cook. At the age of 5 I wanted to be Napo-león. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since.”

“The difference between the surrealists and me is that I am a surrealist.”

The Ghost of the Evening, 1930

El surrealismo de DalíDalí began to paint a

dream world in which normal objects became deformed and transformed in a bizarre and irrational way.

Dalí painted objects with a lot of detail and placed them in a bleak, sunlit landscape.
