Dear Parishioners,
Part of the liturgy during
Lent is the ceremonial blessings of
those who are formally entering
the Catholic Church at the Easter
Vigil. The process is known as
the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, or RCIA.
We have 7 members of the parish who have been in
the Journey of Faith prayer group preparing to enter
the Church.
The Journey of Faith Prayer group has three
levels of participation: Those who want to become
Catholic, those who are just inquiring about the
Catholic Faith, and those who are Catholic but wish
to “get back to the basics” about what we believe and
how to make our faith more deliberate.
I notice there are many members of our
congregation who enjoy coming to Mass but have not
formally entered the Church. If anyone would like to
join Journey of Faith, even if it is just to learn more
about the faith of your spouse, we will be beginning
again after Easter.
During Lent, we will be having the
preparatory steps of the Scrutinies for those who are
called “Elect,” those who are planning to enter the
Church at the Easter Vigil. The Scrutinies is a way
of renouncing the old way of living and being
dedicated to a new life in Christ.
Any Catholics who have the honor of
knowing a convert can tell you that new Catholics are
often more dedicated than cradle-Catholics. Perhaps
it is time for all of us to renew our commitment. As
we offer the Scrutinies to the Elect, I invite the whole
parish to consider solemnly rededicating their lives to
Christ. Often Jesus says we are not to be like the
pagans. Even the pagans treat well those who return
the favor. As Christians, we must go over and above
the normal expectations of society. We are called to
be living examples of the love of Christ. Our actions
should give witness to our Christian witness. So, let
us all renounce our old way of life of sin and
lukewarm faith, and become intentional disciples of
the one true Lord in all we do.
In Christ,
Father Michael J. Stalla

What is “right” and “wrong”? Is what’s right for you right for me? Is there a right and wrong for everyone, all the time?
These are difficult questions to discuss in our culture. We live in a society that supports the opinion that each person should make up his or her own morality—that there is no moral truth that applies to everyone. Many of us have been affected by the relativistic outlook that pervades the modern world. Maybe some of us wonder whether there really is an absolute right and wrong for everyone. Or maybe we accept that there is a moral standard for all, but we don’t know how to explain our moral convictions in a convincing way. Maybe some of us are afraid of saying something is immoral because we’re afraid of offending others or of being labeled intolerant. How do we talk about morality in a relativistic world?
In this small group study program featuring Edward Sri, we'll explore the classical view of morality and find that it’s not merely a set of guiding principles for theoretical situations—it is an entire way of life.
