From Fr. Charbel… Pentecost Sunday May 20, 2018
My Dear parishioners and friends,
Peace be with you!
“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when He said
this He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.
This Sunday we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, meaning fiftieth in Greek. Fifty days have passed
since Easter. Fifty days of joy, of confidence and abundance, but also days marked by uncertainty.
The Lord who appeared to the apostles was unrecognizable but also recognizable, and the disciples
knew that it was the Lord Jesus who appeared to them and ate with them after His resurrection. The
disciples were instructed to remain patient, awaiting the coming of the Paraclete, of the Comforter, to
remain with us forever. The perpetual comforter that the Lord promised to us is with us now.
Pentecost is not just a Sunday celebration; is not just a season or annual feast for us. Certainly not!
Pentecost is not simply a fact or event that we commemorate. Surely not! Pentecost is our beginning,
our ever-present moment, the birthday of the Church. Whatever it is that we face in our lives,
whatever our problems and difficulties in life, the Holy Spirit is interceding for us and also present to
us, to transform everything and inspire us, so that God's work within us can be revealed.
So wherever we are today and however our lives are going, the Spirit of God is with us. Inspired by
His action in our lives, we receive the courage to lift up our hearts with the hope and the confidence
that the same Spirit, the Spirit of the risen Lord, will fill us and make us new.
Here is the mission of the comforter in our lives, to conform us to Christ; to help us to be Christ for
others, for our neighbors and brothers in Christ, so that we can begin to live the new life promised by
His coming. The Holy Spirit helps us individually but also helps us in and through the Church, the
living body of Christ. Before Jesus died, He established a "community" of believers and gave that
"community" apostles, teachers and leaders...It was on this "community", the Church, that the risen
Lord sent the Holy Spirit. This is why Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church.
Pentecost is a time given to us to open our hearts, minds and souls to this great gift to the Church,
and to know how the Spirit desires to work in each one of us. We need to talk, so the Spirit can speak
through us; We need to talk so others can hear the same Spirit.
Happy Feast of Pentecost.
In Cristo,
Fr Charbel

Vocation view - Pentecost Sunday
The confused and fear-filled Apostles were totally changed by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, as they became powerful and dynamic proclaimers of their faith in Jesus Christ. God calls Priests and Religious to serve Him and to serve others, especially by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in today’s Church. If you feel a call to a Church vocation, visit www.diobr.org/vocations and contact Fr. Andrew Merrick at 225-336-8778 or email him at amerrick @diobr.org
Legion of Mary Membership
“The month of May, in our rich Catholic heritage and tradition, is celebrated as one of the months dedicated to the honor of the Mother of God.” As Catholic Christians, we have a duty to glorify the Thrice-Holy God in every aspect of our lives! The members of Our Lady of the Rosary Praesidium, LEGION OF MARY, delight in sharing a “Church-approved, Christo-centric” way to do just that!! Blessings abound when we serve Our Lady’s interest… which always direct us to Our Lord Jesus Christ. Please find joy-inducing membership information on the tables at all church entrances.
