Mathematics being one of those works. He made the
students realize how easily a multiplication table could
be learnt. Giving the name of crazy mathematics to this
he made the students calculate the squares of numbers
ending with 5 in a simple and effective way.
After making us learn few important methods to do the
operation between the numbers, he passed on to some
important concepts of mathematics, like the number Pi
and the infinity concept. This was followed by a short
introduction of the well-known mathematicians like
Gauss and Galois.
He urged the students to work in such a way that they
could contribute something new to the field of mathe-
matics. Following that, we had a short note on the appli-
cation of mathematics in day to day life. The pressure
cooker that makes use of the energy equation concept,

models were placed in the separate area of the park de-
picting the valuable information about each of the Dino-
saur species like Dimetrodon Grandis (two–tooth lizard),
Plateosaurus (flat lizard), Branchiosauraus (arm lizard).
After a visit to the park, we moved on to Pilikula region-
al science centre, where we observed working models of
gravity well, Cone runs Vphill, optical illusions , lines of
force reacting with a magnet, sand art, hotspot, Pythag-
orous theorem, head on platter, symapathetic swing,
Moiré pattern, Infinity well, Kaleidoscope. Thereafter
we to went to biological sector where we saw Gregor
Mendel experiment demonstration, quiz board and later
watched an amazing 3D show.
After moving out of the park, everyone was provided
with refreshments. Later we moved towards the biologi-
cal park, which has the major focus on the wildlife spe-
cies of Western Ghats, this park is named as Dr. Shiva-
ram Karanth Biological Park.
The view of the park was just so fascinating. Different
species of animals were displayed. To name a few of
them are white Peafowl, Malabal Gaint Squirrel, Jungle
cat, Ruddy Mangoose, Flying Squirrel, Leopard cat,
Tiger, Bear, various species of snake etc. After a com-
plete view of the zoo we then boarded back to College.
The field trip was a memorable experience where every-
one had an opportunity to learn something new and
modify our ideas based on scientific imagination.
The centre through its interactive science exhibits and
free choice science learning activities has captured the
minds of everyone.

Celebrate! „tis a great gift
C elebrate? What? , Yes celebrate life, for every per-
son is a gift of God to one another. Above all we cele-
brate the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ to humankind by
The Father, and that is Christmas.
Yes we the students of Matrix association celebrated
Christmas on 16th of December with the specially gifted
children at St. Agnes special school at Bendore. It was
the joy of every student to share their Christmas joy
with those children for about an hour in the morning
from 10 to 11 am. Starting with prayer song, entertain-
ing them through creative math, dance and Christmas
play along with the carols we not only gave joy to them
rather we received doubly the joy and peace. It was in-
deed a happy moment in our lives to share Christ with
all whom we met on that day.
We also shared our Christmas joy with the ―Sashay‖ old
age home inmates at Kankanady, by sharing our might
in the form of coconuts, rice, sugar, soap, oil and other
needy things. It was our joy to share our little things
and our love, with the 21 inmates who were need of love
and merciful touch.
On 22nd we the students along with our lecturers cele-
brated Christmas as one family in the department of
Mathematics. God chose a family to be the ‗locus‘ of in-
carnation, His greatest encounter with humanity.
Christmas is therefore about the birth of a family, as
much as it is about the birth of Jesus. And therefore we
the students of Matrix association as one family cele-
brated Christmas, by conducting a short quiz on the
birth of Jesus, creative games highlighting Crib, for
Lecturers and with singing carols and sharing Christ-
mas cake. Thus we celebrated the joy of Christmas in
the oneness of the family of Math. We then dispersed by
picking the names of our Christmas friends keeping
them in our prayers in secret until we meet again at the
dawn of a new year 2017.
May Christmas bring abundant blessings on all people
of good will.

Heart-warming - Students help lady on train, earn husband's gratitude
S ometimes, little deeds of kindness can go a long way in helping somebody. While most of us bemoan the fading
away of humanity and values in today's world, here are three young men who, with their noble act, have set an ex-
ample for all to follow.
Royal Pais, Lincoln Pinto and Stephen Lopes, students of second BCom in St Aloysius College here, came to the res-
cue of a lady who was travelling alone with her infant and inadvertently entered the wrong train coach. The lady's
husband, in an act of equal large-heartedness, has sent an email to the college profusely thanking the three young-
sters.
Here's what happened. On Novemeber 2, the lady, wife of Major Pramod S Dixit, was travelling from Mangaluru
Junction to Bengaluru by Bengaluru Express when she mistakenly got into a wrong coach which was about nine
coaches away from the cor-
rect one. "She was travelling
with heavy baggage and
(our) one-and-half-year-old
daughter. She was strug-
gling with the luggage with
her daughter in her arms. It
was an impossible task of
moving through a running
train to traverse through
eight coaches with an infant
by the arm and heavy lug-
gage," said Major Dixit.
"At this point, about halfway
through this desperate situation, she happened to cross a compartment that was occupied by some students. One boy
readily offered to help her move the heavy baggage till her seat. On reaching the seat, she requested them to help
her with more luggage which she had left behind in the old coach. The boys readily agreed to assist. They then
helped her move a very heavy bag all the way through eight coaches," he explained.
This heart-warming act was much appreciated by Major Pramod S Dixit in his mail to Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal
of St Aloysius College, on Sunday December 4.
"On her enquiry if she could do anything for them, they cheerfully declined any return favours and proudly declared
that they were 'students of St Aloysius'," he said.
Expressing profuse gratitude, Major Dixit told the principal, "Three students of your college saved my wife from a lot
of trouble and deserve a hearty thanks on our behalf. It is my kind request if the students be identified and our grat-
itude be conveyed to them. In the days when morality and social etiquettes are on a down side roll, such selfless acts
by young people is a silver lining. It is indeed doubtless that the grooming by their parents and your institution has
moulded them into such well mannered and selfless individuals."
Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal of St Aloysius College said, "The motto of our college is 'To be
men and women for others'. These young boys have done the same. We have a programme called 'Sahaya', wherein
every student has to spend 20 hours in a year visiting orphanages and teaching them and engage in many more ac-
tivities. The college has the responsibility of building better citizens for the country. The noble act by the three stu-
dents will be recognised by the college. All these three students are part of All India Catholic Union Faderation
(AICUF)."
Mother Teresa, or St Teresa of Calcutta, once said, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the
ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop". Indeed, every deed of kindness can make this
world a much better place, and the trio from St Aloysius College just proved it.
