Developing Sustainable

OER Release Models Rowan Wilson, Legal Officer

12 February 2010

Our project so far…• 7 lecture series (around 65-70 hours)• 20 sets of other resources (including seminars,

interviews, conference presentations and panel discussions).

• Over 150 media items are currently available as open content through http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/openspires.html

• More items are being edited and will soon be available• Subject areas already covered include politics,

economics, environmental change, business, research ethics, medicine, physics, English, classics, art history and philosophy

What we did…• Inhabit an existing content production

workflow (iTunesU)• Find and employ ‘agents’ to communicate

the value of the project around the institution

• Adapt the host workflow to make OER release a low-effort option (including IPR process)

What made this hard…

• Navigating the poorly-charted channels of institutional power (ongoing)

• Slipstreaming OER (and IPR) training into pre-existent training courses

• Getting to grips with contributor motivations

What creates sustainability?• A ‘host’ activity?• Low overheads?• Peer pressure?• Clear expression of an activity’s benefits?

‘Brand’ enhancement possibilities?Improving access?Demonstrable public impact?

• Development of community
