Project Location

Project Objectives

• To replace a one-span bridge in a historically sensitive area

• However, the nature of the location presented many challenges…

Village of Skaneateles

• There is always something happening (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall)

Winter in Skaneateles

Spring in Skaneateles

Summer in Skaneateles

Fall in Skaneateles

And of course……

Existing Structure

• 33-foot, single-span jack arch • 87 feet wide• Stone abutment on unknown foundation• Four travel lanes with parking• Two 10-foot sidewalks• On National Highway System• AADT = 12,300• Heavy truck traffic • Gas, water, telephone, electric, cable

Where’s the Bridge?

Where’s the Foundation?

Originally Scoped as Rehabilitation

• Superstructure on existing abutments

• Diving inspection determined that foundation support was uncertain

• Wingwall foundations consisted of timber piles with significant undermining

Replacement Required• Existing stone abutments, poor sub soils

• Location of restaurant and alley

• Construction between Labor Day and Memorial Day, only

• Maintain single lane of traffic in each direction (complete closure not possible)

• Maintain pedestrian traffic

• Maintain aesthetics of historic setting

• So, how were the goals achieved?

Proposed Plan

Details

• Bored in piles through existing stone abutments
