After Blanca’s thoughtful invocation, Ed Smith lead the Pledge of Allegiance and turned the microphone over to Keith Nelson for recitation of the Four Way Test.Scott Jackson led a riotous sing-along with Village People’s disco classic “YMCA” which somehow morphed to “RYLA” with Jim Parsons, Jerry Rekers, Uzo Okereke, and Bob Fish providing background alliteration.John Brainerd introduced guests: Dick Holmgren (CPA Newport Balboa Rotary),Richard Ruiz (Rotaract liaison), and Valerie Hall (Edson Ins). Mr. Ruiz provided a summary requesting assistance with UCI Rotaract’s upcoming “Passion Fest” talent contest.Following introduction of guests, President Bob announced the District Conference May 2-4 at Knott’s Berry Farm, RI Convention -Lisbon, Portugal -June 23-26, and club’s board meeting Jan 24 at 10:30 a.m. at UCI.Other announcements included a reminder that Group Study Exchange-Finland has openings. Also, President Bob would like someone to help re-start our monthly third Friday
happy hours. Finally, Pat Brainerd reminded everyone that the Club will have a special Valentine’s Day meeting on Thursday, February 14 and spouses or significant others are welcomed to attend. Next, while Ron Hodge was busy checking stock listings on his cell phone during the meeting, Fine Mistress Blanca O’Campo managed to fine almost everyone in the room in her usual joyous style. First, Pat Kolstad paid $45 for the unknown contents of a small RYLA bag provided by our weekly speaker. Next, Ed Smith donated $118 for his 70th birthday up-coming January 16, and 40th anniversary January 30. Congratulations Ed! How do you keep looking so young? Uzo Okereke got hit for $50 for his successful mediation of a homeowner’s association flooding dispute with a local park. Uzo’s company, DMC Engineering specializes in water issues and drainage matters. Uzo has his 33rd anniversary coming up on Jan 29. Congrats Uzo! Len Fulmer got the surprise touch for “happy bucks” but did not seem too happy about it at first. Jim Parsons is celebrating his wife Alice’s 80th birthday. We all miss you, Alice. John Brainerd was up early ushering RI President Tanaka and RI VP Shubert to ride Rotary’s Rose

[Con%nued] Jackie has served as a RYLA team assistant for 8 years; she provided a moving description of RYLA’s activities promoting youth leadership in District 5320. Her assistant at Edson Insurance, Valarie Hall, provided her personal testimony as a former RYLA camper shortly after she graduated from a rehab program during high school. RYLA literally helped Valerie turn her life around. She has been back as an alumni supervisor for RYLA every year since then.Between the boojum and “high ropes” courses, RYLA builds great leaders of the next genera%on. We need more Rotarians to volunteer as team assistants for RYLA Apr 26-‐28, 2013 in Illywild Pines. If you would like to volunteer, pick up forms online at hZp://RYLA5320.org/rotarian-‐forms. You can also volunteer by contac%ng Jackie Savidan at 949-‐468-‐9394 or email at Jacqueline@EdsonInc.org.
