Thumb forceps are commonly held between the thumb andtwo or three fingers of one hand, with the top end resting onthe anatomical snuff box at the base of the thumb and indexfinger. Spring tension at one end holds the grasping ends apartuntil pressure is applied. This allows one to quickly and easily
grasp small objects or tissue to move and release it or to graspand hold tissue with easily variable pressure. Thumb forcepsare used to hold tissue in place when applying sutures, togently move tissues out of the way during exploratory surgeryand to move dressings or draping without using the hands or
fingers

Forceps or forcipes are a handheld, hinged instrument usedfor grasping and holding objects. Forceps are used whenfingers are too large to grasp small objects or when many
objects need to be held at one time while the hands are usedto perform a task. The term 'forceps' is used almost
exclusively within the medical field. Outside medicine, people usually refer to forceps as tweezers, tongs, pliers,
clips or clampsThere are two basic types of forceps: non-locking (oftencalled 'thumb forceps' or 'pick-ups') and locking, thoughthese two types come in dozens of specialized forms for
various uses.

In medicine, a catheter is a tube that can beinserted into a body cavity, duct, or vessel.
Catheters thereby allow drainage, administration of fluids or gases, or access bysurgical instruments
Uses
Placement of a catheter into a particular partof the body may allow:
draining urine from the urinary bladderas in urinary catheterization, e.g., theintermittent catheters or Foley catheter oreven when the urethra is damaged as insuprapubic catheterisation.
drainage of urine from the kidney bypercutaneous (through the skin)nephrostomy
drainage of fluid collections, e.g. an
abdominal abscess

A scalpel, or lancet, is a small and extremely sharp bladedinstrument used for surgery, anatomical dissection, andvarious arts and crafts (called a hobby knife)
Gripping a medical scalpel
1. Palmar gripAlso called the "dinner knife" grip. The handle is held with thesecond through fourth fingers and secured along the base of thethumb, with the index finger extended along the top rear of theblade and the thumb along the side of the handle. This grip is bestfor initial incisions and larger cuts.
2. Pencil gripBest used for more precise cuts with smaller blades (e.g. #15) andthe #7 handle. The scalpel is held with the tips of the first andsecond fingers and the tip of the thumb with the handle resting onthe fleshy base of the index finger and thumb. Care should betaken not to allow the handle to rest too far along the index finger
as this promotes an unstable grip and cramped fingers.

A splint is a device used for support or immobilization oflimbs or of the spine
It can be used:
By the emergency medical services or by volunteerfirst responders, to immobilize a fractured limb beforethe transportation; it is then a temporary immobilization;
By allied health professionals such as occupationaltherapists, physiotherapists and orthotists, to immobilizean articulation (e.g. the knee) that can be freed while notstanding (e.g. during sleep).
By athletic trainers to immobilize an injured bone orjoint to facilitate safer transportation of the injuredperson.
By emergency room physicians to stabilize fractures
or sprains until follow-up appointment with anOrthopedist.

into the earsHealth care providers use otoscopes
to screen for illness during regularcheck-ups and also to investigate
when a symptom involves the ears. With an otoscope, it is possible tosee the outer ear and middle ear.

A bedpan or bed pan is an object used for thetoileting of a bedridden patient in a health
care facility, usually made of a metal, glass,or plastic receptacle
Bedpans are usually constructed of stainlesssteel and may be cold, hard and
uncomfortable. On the other hand, stainlesssteel is easy to clean and durable, andbacteria have little chance to survive

An instrument used to measure temperature. There are many types of thermometers; the mostcommon consist of a closed, graduated glass tubein which a liquid expands or contracts as thetemperature increases or decreases. Other types of
thermometers work by detecting changes in thevolume or pressure of an enclosed gas or byregistering thermoelectric changes in a conductor(such as a thermistor or thermocouple).

a device for withdrawing, injecting, or instilling fluids. Asyringe for the injection of medication usually consists of acalibrated glass or plastic cylindric barrel with a close-fittingplunger at one end and a small opening at the other towhich the head of a hollow-bore needle is fitted.
Kinds of syringes include
Asepto syringe,
bulb syringe, hypodermic syringe,
Luer-Lok syringe.
